The people who give up on change are the ones who end up either crotchety about New Year's resolutions (and life), over do some behavior (think eating, drinking, shopping, sex) to escape their reality to dull out their pain.
The change in calendar does not give us more will power nor does it give us more determination. Notice throughout the year, we declare we'll start a new diet on a Monday. Rarely do our eating habits change when we start our new week.
The truth is, the mind has infinite room for growth. Once it achieves momentum, it will want more. But it cannot go from 0-120 mph instantly. It has to work itself up to that. If you have a desire or a dream, don't allow yourself to get in your own way. Make a realistic action plan.
If you want this to be the greatest year of your life then you must make a commitment to change the course of your life. Without commitment you will continue to experience cycles of frustration and failure. Do not just set goals. Make this the year that you create a game plan for success.
Isn't it our innate human desire to know that our life matters? Don't we all want to be assured that we are living lives of significance and will leave the world a little better than when we found it? Decide on your own measures of success. Own them. And commit to living them today.
There's a feeling of optimism and hope buying a new planner and filling it with plans. I get the same feeling when I mentally swear off carbs. The first few days are good. I am driven, organized, focused and hopeful. And then, just like that, I am on the other side of the apex.
It is common to complain about the constraints in our lives: too little time, not enough money, too small of a network, barely enough resources. Certainly, some of these constraints do hold us back. However, there is also a positive side.
Finding focus can sometimes be a struggle for me. If you haven't noticed, I have a lot of things I want to do going on all at once. In 2015, I vow to take each individual task and work hard to complete it before jumping into the next thing. Do I vow to take on less? Absolutely not.
