While Superstorm Sandy forced many people to relocate from destroyed homes, it also drove many others deeper into isolation inside their own homes. Natural disasters hit the vulnerable especially hard.
As unfortunate as disasters are, it allows us to strengthen the bond between our government, our businesses and our nonprofit sectors. It is time to realize that the work nonprofits perform is an essential asset to human recovery.
This is all so sad, devastating and unimaginable, but we can't control the forces of Mother Nature -- and this storm brought my company, AOL and the Jersey community all together because all for one and one for all. We are forever Jersey Strong!
Looking back at the devastation Hurricane Sandy brought to New York, it is hard to imagine that the city still managed to function at all. Many stories of bravery and tragedy were recounted but there were also many stories left untold.
Hurricanes are equal opportunity destroyers. The hooked-in have escape hatches when forewarned; a home on higher ground, friends with light and heat, funds for an extended hotel stay. But the rest stay put, through the cold, wet, and fear.
