Iran Should Call the Pro-War Lobby's Bluff
There is a fundamental absurdity hanging over negotiations with Iran, and I fear it could doom the whole enterprise. It is the position of AIPAC as adopted by the Congress of the United States.

So far the Iran talks are going as well as they can. Both sides engaged sincerely, both agreed to a second meeting within five weeks, and both agreed on a framework for continued talks -- the non-proliferation treaty with all its rights and obligations.

After this weekend, there will likely be a redoubled Congressional effort to press forward with a stalled AIPAC and Netanyahu-endorsed push to redefine the diplomatic endgame with Iran in such a way as to rule out any plausible, inspections-based solution.

As President Obama struggles to find a diplomatic solution to the Iran crisis and remain a friend of Israel, he would do well to look at what another Democratic president, Harry Truman, did in 1948 while seeking reelection and dealing with the birth of Israel.

This Friday, I will pray at the Western Wall, that the Iranian threat is different from all other threats. That in the coming year, through strong sanctions and reason, this threat will dissipate and not require a military strike from Israel.

With negotiations about to start next month between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany, this is hardly the moment to roil the atmosphere with saber-rattling talk.

Tensions remain. But one reason why Monday's meeting between Netanyahu and Obama ended with less rancor than did their last tete-a-tete is that Israel is growing more comfortable with U.S. policy -- secret U.S. policy.

There are no good options. The least bad option is to fully utilize the dual approach of sanctions and diplomacy and to guarantee Israel's safety in exchange for Israel not striking Iran.
Abraham H. Foxman | Posted 05.08.2012
If Israel believes it can set back the Iranian program substantially and if it perceives Western efforts to pressure Iran are not progressing fast enough to stop the Iranian program, Israel would be acting first to defend itself. But it also would be serving the interests of the Middle East, the U.S. and the wider world.
