Few people realize that the series of children's books by L. Frank Baum, on which the film was based -- most notably The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and some 15 subsequent Oz volumes published during the first two decades of the 20th Century -- is riddled with political references and serves as an allegory for American populism in the 1890s. The parallels to Trump's campaign are profound.
Unfortunately, it seems the latest return to Oz sounds it keeping with our culture's taste for the amplification and perversion of nearly everything. Regrettably, even The Wizard of Oz isn't immune from our culture's apparent erosion of innocence. It should be remembered, though, that in 1939, MGM's version of Oz was technically a remake.
