162,000 new jobs in March, according to Friday's report from the Department of Labor. That's good news. But let's hold off on the fireworks for a while -- and no, not because we've all become jaded and cynical after so much economic pain.
Once again, the state has no budget. The problem? There's nobody to be afraid of. New York is not a place that operates on rational debate or planning. Power comes from two things: money and fear. Right now we don't have either.
I am directing the elimination of 1,000 filled, full-time position authorities and instructing the Personnel Dept. to immediately begin calculating layoff, displacement seniority and/or transfers of employees filling these positions.
