We are in fact still in the Mubarak era. The old regime may not exist in the Egyptian streets or in the offices of government but it dwells deep in the bellies of the bureaucracy that owes it very existence to him.
Sovereign nations cannot have feelings as people do -- but there are times when they would blush if they could. The ascent of the administration to the perfection of embarrassment was gradual, and its stages deserve to be remembered.
How is it that dictators and arrogant financial people are able to seize and hold onto control for so long, especially when soon after they seize or gain power the conditions for the common people and the attention to human rights deteriorate?
