I have always been proud to call progressive, liberal San Francisco my adopted home, until now. I was horrified to learn that San Francisco is one of the centers for international crime networks that smuggle and enslave women.
Until now, I have not written about Whitney Houston, largely because so many others have. However, when I learned that Los Angeles radio hosts, John and Ken of KFI AM 640 had referred to Ms. Houston as a "crack ho", I could not remain silent.
The fact is that we are, more often than not, much harder on ourselves than anyone else is. In my experience, men and women often believe that being attractive on the outside has something to do with being attractive on the inside.
"I want people of the world to know that people like me come from Bwaise. I know you know about the floods, about the poverty, about the sex work. But I want you to know that there are also inspired, committed young people!"
There are more slaves in the world today than were taken from Africa in the four centuries of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade--over 27 million. Of those, two million are children exploited in the commercial sex trade.
Could it really be true that a being so intelligent like man, still hasn't evolved to a level where slavery and abuse of others are just memories of a cruel past? Do a little searching and some real disgust starts to develop.
The perspectives of sex workers are sidelined in the public discourse on sex ads. Of the many politically savvy voices that fill the debate, few belong to the human beings on whose bodies this culture war is being waged.
