Beyond Realism and Idealism: Explaining Obama's Shifting Middle East Policy

Ty McCormick | Posted 08.14.2011

Ty McCormick

All this talk of dithering and deference would be interesting if it didn't confuse realism with isolationism while also misidentifying the point at which Obama's foreign policy began to tack away from its early "realist" positions.

Samantha Power Clarifies Her Comments on Israel

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach | Posted 06.12.2011

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

There have been minor comments by Samantha Power that have been interpreted as hostile to Israel, but those interpretations rely on a false assumption. Power is a heroic defender of Israel.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

It's clear that with his most recent ramblings the description 'respected international jurist' will never again be appended to Richard Goldstone. But much more troubling are the comments now being attributed to Samantha Power.

Obama Moved at Warp Speed on Libya

Steve Clemons | Posted 05.30.2011

Steve Clemons

While President Obama has been criticized by many on the political left and right for moving too slowly in reacting to Libya, there is simply no truth to the notion that he dragged his heels in orchestrating action there. The decisions made by the White House on Libya, whether one liked or disliked those decisions, happened at an incredible rate. Obama has changed the dynamics of response to potential and real mass human tragedy.

U.S. incentives to Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir seem to have backed him off from the threat of renewed war and mass killings in the south, at least for now.

By being too supportive of what has been called democracy's shinning light in Southeast Asia, the United States effectively gives Indonesia a free pass against human rights abuses and intolerance.

Sergio: A Must-See Documentary

Arianna Huffington | Posted 01.03.2012

Arianna Huffington

This week I wrote about our latest Book Club pick, Shadow Elite, which documents the poisonous effect the rise of a "transnational" class of elites has had on our democracy. Today I want to give you an antidote: Sergio is a powerful and deeply moving documentary I recently saw that tracks the remarkable life -- and tragic death in Iraq at the hands of a suicide bomber -- of UN envoy Sergio de Mello, one of the greatest (albeit least heralded) peacemakers of the 20th century. Described as "a cross between James Bond and Bobby Kennedy," he spent his life trying to end conflicts in the world's most dangerous places. Based on a book by Samantha Power, the film has been short-listed for the Best Documentary Oscar. So add it to your Netflix queue. And if you happen to be a member of the Academy, vote for Sergio!
