Emotional injuries don't heal with Neosporin. They can lead to self-perpetuating conditions (self-starvation, cutting), a hypo-cortisol awakening response and more reports of pain disability and health problems for bullied kids.
The very idea that someone would intentionally physically hurt himself -- to feel better -- is something that many people find difficult to understand, even unfathomable. But the reality is that non-suicidal self-injury is much closer to home than you might think.
I didn't expect much from the MTV special Demi Lovato: Stay Strong, figuring it would be a lot of spin about the former Disney star's rehab stint -- a generic, PR-laced message of salvation with no real details about what the 19-year-old is truly like. I'm happy to be proven wrong.
Cutting is still something we have a low general awareness about -- the idea of inflicting self-injury on oneself in an attempt to feel better just doesn't add up. But it's a trend that is becoming more prevalent in young women.
