The culture of the Maasai is also fundamental to the Serengeti. They tend livestock for sustenance and so for centuries have coexisted with the big mammals of East Africa without greatly exploiting them.
Group mentality isn't about putting on a pretty spectacle though, it's about staying safe in the midst of cunning predators. But if you're inclined to think zebras are just a bunch of 'nervous Nancys,' well, you're half right.
Though I had no one close to share the memories with, I was able to focus more clearly on what makes the experience so memorable. There is something about connecting with nature in such a profound way that forces you see things from a new perspective.
