Public space has traditionally been an entirely male sphere. It's only recently that this has begun to change. But, like street harassment, rape and physical assault, online abuse is largely tolerated. And, like harassment, women are supposed to quietly adapt.
When you think of what a leader looks like, what comes to mind? A man, probably white. How about weak people, needing protection? Do images of women pop into your head unbidden? Our media continue to do a good job making sure that these images aren't changing much.
This is The Year of the Woman. Again. As a result of Tuesday's elections, the 113th Congress will include the highest number of women senators ever: 20. Hate to be a killjoy but the truth is that even with this improvement women are still woefully underrepresented in this country.
