As we commemorate Teacher Appreciation Week, it's a good time to reflect: if we depend on teachers to develop the future workforce and help turn our children into productive members of society, what can we do about this problem?
What ought to be clear to all of us by now is that the institutional structure of schools and school systems is ill-conceived. It is a failure. And this failure is at the root of all other educational failures.
Teacher Appreciation Week soon will be over. Will America's teachers continue to be subjected to degradation and prevented from having a meaningful say in their profession? Or will their dedication and desire to help kids be respected?
