Iran backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the war while Saudi Arabia supports rebels seeking to oust him.

Khamenei supported the last 18 months of negotiations on nuclear talks but has not publicly endorsed the deal itself.

"We will not forget the past, but we do not wish to live in the past," he tells U.N.

Different Iranians call the deal "the best resolution," "a path to the progressive world" and "nothing more than a piece of paper."
