A commission that voted for the removal has called for a monument of Black civil rights icon Barbara Johns to take its place.
Law enforcement arrested 13 people last week who allegedly plotted to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Activists have long denounced the monument to the Confederate leader, which has spurred increased backlash as people protest against racist police brutality.

The Justice Department is supporting Lighthouse Fellowship Church, which is suing Gov. Ralph Northam (D) for restricting in-person religious services.
Ralph Northam and Larry Hogan told Sunday talk shows that states do not have the testing supplies needed to "reopen" the economy by May 1.
