Slate.com Political Reporter Dave Weigel recently spoke with us at The Jefferson Hotel in Washington D.C. about the growing outrage over the NSA surveillance program.

In reaction to lawmakers and NSA officials asking Americans to trust that the NSA isn't invading their privacy, Weigel suggests "just trust us" doesn't cut it:

You're saying, 'You have to trust us, there definitely were situations were hundreds of people would have died and we stopped them...and this was the only way to stop them.' People want more proof than that.

Weigel also thinks the Edward Snowden leaks have re-opened a discussion that was on "pause."

The administration is more worried about it than it had been before, the NSA is more worried about it than it had been before...it's completely changed the interest people have and the way they that they think about national security.
