* Marty Chavez was born in Albuquerque in 1952.
* He attended Manzano High School, University of New Mexico (BA, 1975), and Georgetown Law School (JD, 1978)
* In 1985 he was appointed the founding Director of the New Mexico State Workers' Compensation Administration.

* As a Democrat, Chavez has served as Mayor of Albuquerque, 1993-1997 and 2001-present; he was a State Senator from 1989-1993.
* He is Vice-President of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors.
* Nominated by Howard Dean and elected as an at-large delegate to the DNC. He is a member of the DNC.
* On December 7, 2007, he withdrew from the race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Domenici

* He states that he contribute $2,000 to Hillary Clinton from funds raised during his abortive U.S. Senate campaign.

*Gwaltney has lived in Las Cruces,for forty-eight years. Her husband served ten years in the New Mexico State Senate.Her great-great-great grandfather, Wilson Lumpkin(1831-1835),was the first "Democratic" Governor of Georgia,and was both a US congressman,and senator.
