WHO: Ambassador Robert Gelbard and Senior Policy Advisor Dan Restrepo
WHAT: Press conference call to discuss Barack Obama's Latin American policy
WHEN: Wednesday, July 2 at 2:00 p.m. EDT
SUMMARY
In this press conference call, Ambassador Robert Gelbard and Senior Policy Advisor Dan Restrepo outlined Barack Obama's Latin American policy plan. "Unfortunately over the last 8 years we have fallen into this trap is that our relationships are defined and our economic relationships are defined solely in the context of free trade agreements," said Restrepo. Both discussed a plan that would promote further cooperation with Mexico and other countries to fight drug trafficking. They also said that an Obama administration would focus more on improving working conditions when considering free trade agreements. Gelbard said an Obama presidency would mean a marked shift in Latin American relations from the Bush administration. In contrast, he points out that McCain's Latin American advisers include two former Assistant Secretaries of State for Latin American affairs from the Bush Administration, which, he says, has failed to effectively fight drug trafficking .
