How Old Is Your Spirit?

By meditating on your spirit, you allow for it to live in you without any resistance. Spirit has no limitation, and if we can separate it from our age as its own form of expression, we can be surprised and delighted by its vibrancy, which can appear very young and youthful.

"Don't make the body do what the spirit does best, and don't put a big load on the spirit that the body could easily carry." -- Rumi

If you were to put your age aside for a minute, how old would you say your spirit is?

By spirit, I mean, your energy, your life force, your "joie de vivre," which basically means your joy of everything.

Does it come up as the age you are, or does it seem younger or older?

Some people will say they feel much younger than they actually are, and what that means is that their spirit feels more youthful than the number in their head, which can seem old.

Because we are all the age that we are, and that number will increase with every year, it's comforting to know that our spirit has no age because it's ageless. And what that means is that we can give our spirit whatever age we want -- young or old, depending on how we feel.

If you have the spirit, let's say, of a 22-year-old aerobics instructor, and you're actually 50, isn't it exciting to know that there's an energy and spunk in you that is young and vibrant?

When we hold our spirit in our mind as our life force, we can actually transcend any negative beliefs we may have around age or aging. It's like we become pure spirit, and not a number.

Here is a meditation you can do to feel your spirit and welcome it into your being as divine consciousness, which is eternal:

  1. Sit comfortably somewhere quiet.

  • Close your eyes.
  • Cup your hands together on your lap.
  • Take four or five deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.
  • As you inhale, say to yourself, "spirit."
  • Feel its presence in you as you exhale out.
  • Experience the oneness of you and your spirit for at least 10 minutes.
  • Take three long, slow deep breaths. Rub the palms of your hands together to generate heat. Place your palms over your eyes and face.
  • Open your eyes and return to awareness.
  • Get up slowly.
  • By meditating on your spirit, you allow for it to live in you without any resistance. Spirit has no limitation, and if we can separate it from our age as its own form of expression, we can be surprised and delighted by its vibrancy, which can appear very young and youthful. And if you happen to feel that your spirit is like that of a 22-year-old aerobics instructor, try taking a class and doing some of the moves. You might put some younger people than you to shame.
