Top 100 Boys' Names of 2010

Posted: 07/13/2010 3:50 pm

Earlier we looked at the most popular girls' names on nameberry so far this year; now we turn our attention to nameberry's top 100 boys' names for 2010.

The top seven names remain the same from the first quarter count, with Henry, Finn, and Oliver holding strong at numbers 1, 2, and 3. This greater stability on the boys' side echoes the pattern in the overall U.S. popularity list, where boys' names tend to maintain their places longer than girls' names.

The fastest riser is Sawyer, with Declan, Simon, Micah, Graham, and Landon also making big leaps. Names that slid the furthest are Kyle and Caleb.

New to the Top 100 from the first quarter (and marked with an asterisk*) are Satchel, Nico, Nicholas, Xavier (number 101 in the last count), Micah, Graham, and Landon. No-shows this quarter include Hugh, Griffin, and Liev.

But don't read too much into which names are moving up and down the list compared with the first quarter. Most shifts are slight and temporary, and it's hard to find any pattern behind them. Some classic boys' names like Michael and Alexander are heading down, for instance, but others such as John, Joseph, and Robert are trending up. Luke and Luca are slipping down, but Lucas is up. These won't necessarily translate into long term trends.

As we said with the girls' list, this roster is vastly different than the official list of Most Popular Names in the U.S. The Social Security list is based on all actual births and name choices in the country, while the nameberry list measures which names our relatively style-conscious visitors are most curious about.

Plus nameberry searches come from around the globe -- about a third of our visitors are from outside the US -- and the nameberry list is up-to-the-minute, while the most recent Social Security list is for 2009. Consider this, then, a look at which names may be more popular in the months and years ahead.

Such metrosexual names these days.

We aren't going to have a kid for a while, but glad to see Desmond isn't on that list (that is what we are thinking if it is a boy).

I have NEVER in my life heard of the name, Satchel. Sounds like some kind of bag. Personally, I will likely stick to more traditional names for my kids.

I worked at a summer camp about 10 years ago and there was a camper called Satchel, he was probably about 12-13 at the time... never met another one though!

Satchel Page is the only one I can think of.

View this list more as a PREDICTOR rather than measure of current numbers. Most of these names are trending in urban upwardly-mobile and artistic communities.

Growing up all the boys had the same name. In class there would be like 4 Mikes, 3 Bobs, 4 Jim's sooo boring. But if you want to be a trendsetter name your son Bob - he will be the ONLY one in his whole school.

tee hee - i'm having a baby boy in august and he is named Max.

Looks like a lot of t.v. and twilight-loving parents - although can some explain to me why there are so many more boys named Jasper than Jacob? Jasper, really?

This is a list of names searched on a baby name web site. Not a list of babies with these names from Social Security. Parents might research the name Jasper but name the baby something completely different.

Thanks for clarifying. I need to be a more careful reader, because I skipped the entire section discussing that. A bit misleading!

Vampire name from Twilight. I wonder how many girls will be named Bella.

My name, James, is in the Top 10 just as it was sixty years ago (so I'm told; it was before my time and I have Abs of Steel and still believe in Santa, too). Can't beat the classics ...

Including short forms of names skews the list. Charlie and Charles were right next to each other!

I assume that names like Melvin and Stanley have completely died out.

Their methodology seems seriously flawed. And the results are very unusual.

Perhaps the folks at Research 200 helped out.

they're trending the top searches for their website. what's the flaw

The flaw is that one person (let's say Julia Roberts) names their kid Finn. Then people Google it. These "Top Names" are nothing more than people searching for information about them. What's flawed is that very few people actually name their kids Finn.
