The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is profoundly disappointed that President Obama has failed to follow through with his promises for 'openness' by reaffirming much of the so-called Tiahrt Amendments.
This means a continuation of the reckless Bush-era policies that endanger public safety and make it easier for criminals to obtain illegal firearms.
President Obama's proposal undermines the landmark Brady Law by continuing the dangerous Bush administration policy requiring the destruction of most Brady background check records in just 24 hours.
The government has found that this policy has allowed guns to remain in the hands of hundreds of criminals whose gun purchases were mistakenly approved. How can the president reconcile this policy with his recent statement calling for stronger enforcement of our gun laws?
President Obama continues to bar the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) from requiring that gun dealers keep track of their firearms by conducting annual inventories -- a standard practice for law-abiding businesses.
A Brady Center analysis last year found that more than 30,000 guns were "missing" from licensed gun dealers. Gun dealers who have large numbers of guns "disappear" from their inventory often supply criminals. The D.C.-area snipers killed 10 people using an assault rifle they obtained from a gun shop that "lost" at least 238 guns, including the snipers' assault rifle, over a three year period.
In addition, President Obama has made the Tiahrt Amendments' unprecedented ban on public disclosure of crime gun trace information even worse than before, now even prohibiting law enforcement from communicating it to the public it serves.
Prior to 2003, non-confidential trace data was available to researchers, public officials, the media and the public, and enabled all of us to better understand the sources of illegal guns, patterns of gun trafficking, the role of gun dealers in supplying the illegal market and other key facts informing public policy.
With gun violence continuing to lead to high levels of death and injury in so many places in our country, policy makers need more, not less, information on the sources of these crime guns. We are saddened to see this "gun exception" to the president's stated commitment to "an unprecedented level of openness in Government."
The Tiahrt Amendments have always been about pleasing a special interest lobby at the expense of public safety. Congress should delete the proposed language and do what the Obama-Biden ticket called for last year when their campaign said they 'would repeal the Tiahrt amendment.'

Paul,
If you're waiting for another"victory" before your next post, you're going to be waiting a while.
Paul:
In a recent FOX News article, you were reproted to have said that the 2nd Amendment protections (Heller vs DC) does not apply to the states.
Do you feel the same way about the rest of the Bill of rights?
Michael

Breaking news!!!
Criminals side step gun shows and get their guns from wounded cops...
http://cbs2chicago.com/local/officer.crash.robbed.2.1021063.html
It must be so hard for the BC to justify their own existence.
Crocodile tears.
I wonder when the BC will start arguing to take away cop guns--after all we have to keep guns away from criminals and it is obvious that Chicago cops are too inept and too crooked to be trusted with ANY gun
Update...
click on ANY of the links under "legislative facts" and you get the same result.
Considering how badly they got creamed LAST year--I am surprised the BC is having another Kali legislative day
I swear, the BC website is an endless source of joy for me.
Scroll down to "Legislative Facts"
Click "Ballistic fingerprints help slove crimes"
hahahahahahahhahahahahahahaha

Even in this job market, the BC can't find qualified help.
BTW, if the BC fixes this based on my tip, my time, my effort...I charge $50 for the IT help.
Just sayin.
It is always nice when the antirights side is the gang that can not shoot straight
While the NRA racks up another victory with the help of the Brady Bunches dream team, this is the victory the BC crows about about...
"In 2001, Law Enforcement Relations staff was proud to announce a new beginning in the fight for a safer America with the introduction of our new names: The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence."
Wow. We get the Heller ruling, Tiahrt upheld, carry in National parks and the BC is patting themselves on the back for successfully changing their own name, ...8 years ago.
Ya, we're quaking in our boots allright.

Don't fret yourself BC, I'm sure Dennis's new book to be released in June will sell like crap covered hotcakes.
P.S. It's not really a good sign when the book's price is reduced before it's even released.
Just sayin.

I am sure that Dennis Hennigan's new book will be as factfilled and insightful as anything Kellerman or Bellesilles has put out--and both of these men are more thoroughly debunked than the worst of the creationists
Member of congress apparently not even aware the Brady Campaign exists...
“People do not want to be on the wrong side of this particular cultural divide,” said Rep. David Price, D-N.C., who supports tougher gun controls. “It’s too bad there’s not a more responsible national organization” to counteract the NRA, he said."
He knows about the NRA, however.
The BC detests being ignored
They know the Brady's exist. Note the qualifier 'responsible'.
How ironic, the gun control advocates, through the election of Obama, have pushed gun ownership to all time high, started a buying spree that still hasn't stopped, created a nationwide ammo shortage, as everyone buys 3 cases at a time, surged the NRA membership to over 5 million, and has put our lobby in the strongest position its ever been in. Over the last few month's, the dem's have made it clear, they want nothing to do with gun control.
Thank you Brady Campaign, you have advanced our cause like no one else could, through the election of Obama. The irony in this is priceless!
Gunbanners always tend to increase gun and ammo sales
Not to mention that Obama signed into law legal concealed carry in our national parks and renewed Tiarht (as Paul whines about above), both of which he opposed!
I love it!
Michael
I am sure Paul hates losing influence--but then again, it is tough even in Kali
Actually, Obama signed into law legal OPEN OR CONCEALED carry in national parks, per whatever the state's laws allow (or don't prohibit).
For example, here in Michigan open carry is permissible because it is not prohibited (as long as you legally own the gun), and local ordinances pertaining to firearm possession or carry are not allowed due to state preemption. The national parks here in Michigan now will have to follow state law with regard to firearm possession and carry, therefore lawful concealed or open carry will be permitted. Forty-three other states have forms of legal open carry, so this applies as well to them.

Paul says that we shouldn't have to stare down loaded AK-47's on hiking trails. In my 15 years hiking and camping in the backcountry, out here in Colorado, I have never, not once, seen an AK-47 on any trail. This is just more emotional, hysterical, completely unsubstantiated garbage coming from the Brady's. This is completely out of the realm of reality.
Emotional, hysterical and completely unsubstantiated GARBAGE is all the BC/VPC has

Washington, D.C. - Sarah and Jim Brady and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence with its network of Million Mom March Chapters endorsed Senator Barack Obama for President and Senator Joseph Biden for Vice President today, and urged Americans to vote for them.
Look in the mirror BC, this is your doing.
hahahhahhahahahahahahahahahahah
I think this is awesome, it must really chap Paul's hide, lol. Tom Coburn is a genius, this is a play straight out of the other side's playbook, it worked! Since Colorado is an open carry state, I'll be in business next year, sweet! Right now, it doesn't look like the Dem's are going to do squat for the Brady's, not before the 2010 elections anyway.
The public's right to FEEL safe does not trump my INDIVIDUAL RIGHT to defend myself, get it?!
And what's really funny is this bill that passed overwhelmingly is even less restrictive than the measure the Brady Campaign sued to get suspended.
Thank you Brady Campaign.
maybe one of these days Paul and the BC/VPC will understand that the extensive gun control they want is a nonstarter
Friday, May 22, 2009
"On Wednesday, NRA-backed legislation to restore the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens in national parks and wildlife refuges passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by an overwhelming bipartisan majority of 279-147. Today, the measure was signed into law and, as specified in the legislation, will take effect in nine months, on February 22, 2010. This was a major repudiation of the gun control community's anti self-defense agenda. "

You won, we lost, right Paul?
Apparently the Messiah signed the credit card bill--so now those with CCWs can carry in parks--so that BC/VPC sponsored lawsuit dies (just like the ones suing Beretta for criminal misuse of guns). It looks like the BC/VPC have lost a bit of influence
"now those with CCWs can carry in parks"
Actually, it's far BETTER now. You may open-carry as well, if it is permissible in your state. Parks now cannot be more restrictive than the state's law in which they are located, which means that I may openly carry in parks in Michigan, since open carry is not prohibited in Michigan. So can the residents of the other 43 states which have some form of permissible open carry.

better with being a bit more conservative--Kelli and Foolsgold jump on ANY error--although with greenrocks, his info is so poor the best take on his statements is to flip them 180 (when greenrocks claims the NRA is losing membership--you know said membership is soaring)
From Kurt's GRE...
"The 2008 election marked a major victory for common sense gun laws. Never in our nation’s history have we had an incoming President and Vice President more supportive of strong gun laws.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence strongly endorsed the Obama-Biden ticket, and for good reason. Barack Obama has consistently supported strong sensible gun violence prevention laws throughout his career, and Joe Biden has been a leader in Congress for strong gun laws.
After eight years of an Administration that catered to the gun lobby, deprived gun violence victims of their rights, and turned a deaf ear to law enforcement and communities seeking to strengthen, not weaken, our gun laws, the incoming Obama-Biden administration represents an historic opportunity for this country to responsibly address our gun violence problem."
Too bad so sad for the Brady Bunch.
According to a recent Brady news release*, as Obama signs the bill today Paul wants him to:
1)"re-affirm his long-standing concern about more guns being carried in more places"
and
2)"promise the American people that he will be taking steps in the near future to help reduce the gun violence in this country"
Keep an eye on the coverage of the signing and let's see if Paul gets what he asks for . . .

Not too long ago...
“The country needs President Obama to show leadership and demand a clean bill that will not force loaded guns into our national parks and bypass a Federal court ruling and an environmental review. Families should not have to stare down loaded AK-47s on nature hikes,” Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke said. “The President should not remain silent while Congress inserts reckless gun policies that he strongly opposes into a bill that has nothing whatsoever to do with guns. He should urge that this provision be removed from the bill.”
Looks like the Brady Bunch has alot of influence,
hahahhahhahahahahahahahahahha
I guess the Heller decision and Obama being elected were a bit less of a victory for the BC than Paul/Kelli/greenrocks thought
The recent ascendancy of Democrats has turned out to be MUCH less of a victory for anti-gun folks. In fact, it's been downright OPPOSITE of their expectations. The disappointment of gun-control advocates is quite palpable. As a lover and defender of freedom and liberty, I am REVELING in their misery!!!
