Take the Internet, for instance. Sure, it's extremely democratic. It has allowed just about anyone to write a book, share stream-of-consciousness thoughts via social media, post photos, record a video, and the like. As a result, there's more content out there than ever. (That's why it's called Big Data.) That doesn't mean, though, that all content is particularly good. In fact, it can be downright difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.

When it comes to comedy, I'll frequently watch the first few minutes of a one-hour special only to be disappointed or unimpressed. With so much material out there, few if any of us just watch what's on one of three television channels. This isn't 1950.

A few months ago, Netflix suggested a comedy special that hooked me immediately. In This Economy? by Gary Gulman is nothing short of brilliant. (His "no can defend" take on The Karate Kid is priceless.) I also enjoyed his new special It's About Time. I reached out to Gary via social media for an interview and, a few hours later, voilà!
