BP Waives Responsibility -- Health Effects of Oil Cleanup Could Be Deadly

What's Your Reaction:

After the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, employees and volunteers working around the oil became seriously ill and many of the thousands of workers died from inhaling the toxic air and handling dispersants that contained benzene and other chemicals.

Those same chemicals are currently being used on the BP Deepwater Oil Disaster.

In the Gulf the people at risk of illness are the thousands of Louisiana fisherman rendered jobless by BP's oil spill. These fishermen have been left with no other option than to work for the same company that has taken away their livelihoods.

In BP's most recent move to avoid responsibility, the company is requiring these men and women to sign the waiver below. The waiver protects BP from being sued by their staff and volunteers for "claims and damages in connection with use of equipment connected with the Response Activities."

In other words, BP has prioritized protecting its corporate interests and pocketbook over providing medical care for injuries and illnesses stemming from those workers and families cleaning up the BP mess.

This is BP's second attempt to dodge responsibility and limit their liability. A previous BP agreement, that gave residents $5,000 in exchange for waiving their right to sue, was already struck down by Louisiana courts.

BP is also responsible for the seepage of methane from its blown well head. The gusher of crude is accompanied by an equal volume of methane. Inhaled at sea level methane kills instantly. Mixed with crude vapor it causes vomitting, severe headaches, and damage to the eyes and other soft tissue. Methane breaks down to formaldahyde and because it is so heavy remains along the surface as formaldahyde until burned off by the sun. It won't surprise me a bit if there are reports of body part eviscerations in humans and animals over the next weeks and months.

Added to the above is the likelihood that ch4 dissociation caused the initial blow out, and also set off a chain reaction under the crust, blowing out older wells. Oilballs reaching the FL/TX beaches, are not from the BP well that oil is from these older wells.

So, blasting "JUNK" into the well head now poses serious risks of further destabilizing more of the ch4. I think that's why BP is holding off. They really don't know how much and where all that ch and ch4 is.

Hold onto your a--.

How many Huffpos are there? As many as there are registered readers? I note with curiosity that the number of posts visible depends on whether I am logged in or not. What is going on?

I take anything from a Greenpeace (what a name to contrast with the reality of their actions - neither green nor peaceful) with a large pinch of salt. The writer has a vested interest in scaremongering, indeed his corporation has raised a fortune from it. My guess is such waivers are routine and, unfortunately, necessary to provide protection against misuse of lawsuits.

Hi Follyle - thanks for the comment. Greenpeace has actually NOT raised a fortune or any significant sums from this oil spill. We don't sacrifice large salaries that we could earn in the for-profit world to scare people and raise fortunes - we do this work out of a genuine concern for the health of our families and our communities. There is a misperception, perpetuated by well documented corporate marketing campaigns, that Greenpeace has not always been peaceful. This is untrue. We were atually founded by Quakers, and believe deeply in peaceful, principled action. Take a look at my recent Washington Times editorial - http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/may/07/peace-as-the-greenpeace-way/

' If you’re one of those who have spent their lives undermining progressive climate legislation, bankrolling junk science, fuelling spurious debates around false solutions, and cattle-prodding democratically-elected governments into submission, then hear this:

We know who you are. We know where you live. We know where you work.

And we be many, but you be few.'

Re income, 200 million euros in 2008 sounds like a fortune to me. As for making money from the oilspill, I guess you will try, but it will be small beer compared to what you have got from climate alarmism.

Money-hungry Worms. The attorneys who drew that up ought to be shot, as an example to other attorneys who are thinking about practicing without ethics.
