3 Chicago Fitness Classes That Rock Out

11/06/2013 02:40 pm ET

A few factors can elevate a fitness class from one-hit wonder to full-blown exercise addiction. Teaching style and studio location rank up there, but so does the soundtrack. Does the music motivate or grate? (And selfishly, can it inspire our own party playlists?)

Here are Chicago's top mix masters who will help you get your move and groove on.
(In the meantime, listen to our workout playlist on Songza here!)

1. The Spin Doctor Cycling instructor Alicia Miller at Flywheel in the Gold Coast has a soundtrack "rule of three." In each class she plays three Top 40 songs that everyone knows, three vintage hits and three lesser-known tracks that match her mood.

2. The Dancing Queens Bonnie Micheli and Tracy Roemer, owners of Shred415, use clubby music to keep clients' hearts thumping for an hour's worth of 15-minute rotations. They're also big on Throwback Thursdays and single-artist blowouts. Tonight at 6:45 and 8 p.m., check out a Total Body with Britney Spears class in Lincoln Park.

2. The Mood Enhancer Darren Press, creative director for the 98.6-degree workout The Mercury Method, masterminds the "space-lounge hybrid" that gives the Wicker Park studio its out-of-this-world vibe. He uses electronic artists like Ott and Trentemøller, whom he finds in obscure places like the Suburbs of Goa channel on the Internet station SomaFM.
