Competition is fierce in the apple world. Crispness is a tight race between Gala and Fuji. Sweetness goes to Red Delicious...or maybe Jonagold? But when it comes to tartness, Granny Smith, hands down, wears the crown. So if your mouth can't stand the puckering, here's our super-easy trick for dialing down the tart.

What you need: A pinch of salt (kosher or regular table salt works just fine)

What you do: Slice the apple and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. The salt heightens the flavor and naturally brings out the sweetness in the fruit.

Science has yet to prove it, but chefs and grannies have sworn by the method for years. We'll go ahead and take their word for it.
