Embracing 'Tebowing'

Posted: 11/02/11 06:14 PM ET

Tim Tebow played poorly this past Sunday in a losing effort against the Detroit Lions. I have nothing more to say about that. What I do want to address is the new craze that has captured the hearts and minds of millions of Tim Tebow fans around the world: "Tebowing."

For the uninitiated, Tebowing is defined as, "to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different." While Tebow has been caught Tebowing at different times in his young career, the rage only began last week when he led the Broncos to a thrilling overtime victory over the Miami Dolphins. At the end of that game the cameras panned to Tebow and, as if on cue, he began Tebowing.

The definition and concept of Tebowing, as well as its name, are the brainchild of Denver native Jared Kleinstein, who now runs the popular website Tebowing.com. On it you can find hundreds of "up to the minute" uploads of people Tebowing. Among the many pictures, there is one of a young boy Tebowing while undergoing chemotherapy, which actually caught Tebow's attention. I find the pictures amusing, cute and mostly done in good taste.

Admittedly, Tebowing has its detractors. For them, Tebowing is just as silly as planking. The only difference is that instead of lying flat in a public space, they are kneeling on one knee. Some argue that Tebowing is an affront to those people who actually pray to God and take their religion seriously.

Tebow, however, is supportive of the concept. Here's what we had to say about it after practice this past Friday: "Yeah, some people don't necessarily take it seriously but they're on their knee praying, so who knows what you're going to think about after that and how that can affect you? Hopefully, it's a good example for people."

Tebow's assessment -- that the pros of Tebowing outweigh the cons -- is found in the Jewish tradition. The Talmud teaches, Mitoch shelo lishma ba lishma. This means that if a person, initially, develops good habits or good behaviors for the "wrong" reasons, eventually he will begin to do those same behaviors for the "right" reasons. Based on this concept, Maimonidies asserts that people should be encouraged to fulfill God's will by being offered incentives for religious observance.

It's true that most of the people Tebowing are not praying at all; they're just having a good time with it. But is there a downside to Tebowing? Instead of planking, which is highly dangerous, they're practicing something that is not only safe and family friendly, but something that is deeply connected to prayer and to God. That, I believe, is a beautiful thing!

As a rabbi, I find myself extremely envious that Tim Tebow can get so many people around the world thinking about prayer. I, and many other clergy, dream about having the platform to "preach the gospel" like he does. If Tebow's football career doesn't pan out, as the experts have been predicting for the last couple of years, ad nauseam, his contributions to faith, religion and God are Hall-of-Fame worthy.

I hope and pray that Tebow's quarterbacking skills improve over the rest of the season and that he has a successful and fulfilling football career. More importantly, though, I hope he continues to do the holy work of bringing people closer to God.

Rabbi,

As a supposed Christian, Tebow surely is aware of the words of Jesus as written in Matthew 6:5.

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

I think he is just showboating.

Tebow played a little better this weekend on the road when allowed to utilize his skills, Rabbi. His rushing threat (119 yards) freed up MaGahee to go off (169 yards)on a division rival. Perhaps God is a fan of Tebowing and moved Coach Fox to design a game plan that utilizes Tim's skills. lol.

I think the whole idea of athletes praying or crossing themselves or whatever after they do something good is silly to start with.
You don't see shoe salesmen tebowing after making a big sale or a tim hortons takeout window guy praying after he sells a dozen glazed and 3 double doubles.

WOW! Dude said Tebow played poorly, what an understatement! As for Tebowing, let me point out a simple truth; players have been kneeling down on one knee and praying for decades now. He's not the first to do it. This is just another example of Evangelical Christians trying to get a foot hold in sports. Afterall, there's billions of dollars floating around the NFL.

Unfortnately for them, the player they've chosen can't play the position he's "hired" to play. I've said all along, the fascination with Tebow was religion, period! I keep seeing professional analysts apologizing for having to tell the "truth" about Tebow, get that, these are former professional athletes having to apologize for truthfully analyzing an athlete for his disastrous play. I've seen those same analysts open and mockingly make fun of other QB's for their lack of ability, even though those players greatly outpace Tebow in ability.

This has to stop. Tebow is deeply religious, and that's ok. He's not paid to be a religious emissary for the NFL, he's paid to play QB. He should be judged and criticized without the religious orthdoxy coming down on people's heads. With all the poverty, war, and disease going on around the world, and with 7 billion other people out there, God only has time for Tebow. Wanna know why people make fun of religious zealouts and are running away from religion, this is example #1. Religion has been cheapened to a marketing ploy.

Maybe you should rebrand it `two short planking'?

Your definition of this great new innovative fad that is sweeping the country sounds a lot like the centuries old act of PRAYING. It's not even unique to athletes, they have done it many times before, usually after a big win.

Didn't the Christ that Tebow claims to follow advise against making a spectacle when one prays? I remember him advising that one should, instead, go off and pray in private.

Who can remember what that Christ guy said? Certainly not those four guys who each wrote a different version of his biography.

I''d rather tebow about the damage done by a war for lies to all the innocent people caught in the needless war just for numerous strategic reasons they are made to suffer again after again after the weaponization to fight Iran... if he was tebowing that or something like it fien, if he was tebowing on camera to promote religion for the sake of promoting religion then not fine and if it were because his game is off, who cares.

Tebowing = Excessive Celebration

Gimme back funny end zone dances or get this clown out of the game! He's only getting so much time on the field because of "Tebowing" not because he's a good player.

Tebowing?? Call it what it really is - pious showing off in pursuit of popularity and endorsement building. Truly spiritual people, who are content with their beliefs, have no need to constantly be displaying them for the benefit of thousands of spectators. If Tebow wants to preach (and at the moment it looks like a more promising career for a failed QB) he can quit his day job and sign on with Pat Roberts.

The Bible verses painted on his face, the public prayer, patting himself on the back for being a good Christian during press conferences. It's so obviously a media stunt.

Last week, AAU basketball team that i coach made a fantastic late comeback from a 10 point 4th quarter deficit and won on a shot at the buzzer. Naturally , we knew who was responsible and kneeled in prayer thanking the Lord for guiding in the winning shot and inducing opponent turnovers. Last night, we failed to give credit to The Divine in our pregame talk and lost by 15.....the Lord's wrath i guess...

Bill Maher related that 3 of the repub candidates claimed to be called by god to run. He then said that if true then god is just effing with 2 of them.
Same analogy applies to sports teams or players praying for their win.
