An Evangelical Attempts to Proselytize Anthony Weiner

Posted: 06/16/11 10:12 AM ET

Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, tweeted a message to Congressman Anthony Weiner saying, "Dear Congressman Weiner: There is no effective 'treatment' for sin. Only atonement, found only in Jesus Christ."

I hear you, Rev. Mohler. But I seem to recall many sexual scandals involving evangelical ministers that would seem to undermine the premise that salvation through Jesus Christ grants immunity to sexual sin.

I have debated Rev. Mohler many times on national TV, most notably on CNN's Larry King Live. We have spent time together in the green room and I have enjoyed his company as a warm and unassuming man and as a lover and supporter of the State of Israel. But just as soon as the TV camera goes on, Mohler's persona changes. He is one of our Christian brothers who believes that Christians alone are saved, that Jews, however moral, ethical, and virtuous, are condemned to the eternal bonfire simply because they don't believe in Christ.

No doubt this is the reason that Rev. Mohler has turned to Weiner, a Jew, and attempted to proselytize him via Twitter, the implication being that Weiner's Judaism has not prevented him from sin but Christianity will.

I have a slightly different take on the matter.

Redemption comes about not through anything we believe but how we behave. A man can repose faith in the law of Moses, he can proclaim his love for Jesus, he can affirm his devotion to Muhammad. He can read the Bible, memorize the Koran, or become a walking index of the New Testament. And none of that will amount to a hill of beans if he texts pictures of his appendage to a woman that is not his wife. It is not faith that guarantees our morality but rather an ironclad commitment to righteous action, be we atheists or theist.

Redemption is never a function of belief and always a function of deed. What Rev. Mohler should have said to Congressman Weiner was that the Judaism in which he was raised has always extolled the virtue of action over dogma, behavior over belief. A man can profess all the love in the world to his wife. But if he breaks her heart by focusing his erotic attention on other women, then his emotions are fraudulent and useless. Jesus expressed the same idea: "By their fruits you shall know them." (Matt: 7-16) Notice that, contrary to Rev. Mohler, he did not say "By their faith you shall know them."

I have counseled many married couples and I have especially sat with countless heart-broken wives who have told me of their husband's infidelities. In their pain, these wives did not much care if their husbands were sincerely religious or utterly secular. They were not focused on whether their husbands believed in G-d or believed in the tooth fairy. Rather, what shook them to their core was that their husbands, whatever their belief, had replaced them with someone else, making them feel unattractive, useless, superfluous, old, and ordinary. They felt abandoned and alone.

Rev. Mohler's tweet gives the misleading impression that faith alone can make a man moral and ethical. Yet the history of religion demonstrates clearly that that this is not the case. There are plenty of atheists who are faithful and romantic, plenty of religious people who cheat or are sexually distracted, and vice versa.

Atonement comes not from belief in Jesus Christ but from getting on your knees in front of the wife whose heart you broke, begging her forgiveness, and placing yourself in an environment of change that will help sustain your new moral commitment. Judaism is emphatic that when it comes to sins that pertain to human relationships, not even G-d can forgive. The injured party must be approached directly.

And if Congressman Weiner is interested is turning his life around, while I thank my friend Rev. Mohler most cordially for offering Jesus, I would tell the good Congressman that he is a Jew and that the wisdom of Judaism is readily available through countless Rabbis who do not seek to judge him but to restore him to a path of moral integrity and righteous action.

I don't know who said it but I love, "Your actions were so loud, I couldn't hear your words." I have friends that are "saved." We're constantly discussing that because two of them are evangelicals. One is a youth pastor, and his wife, my friend, has an master's in some theological study. (She can't believe I'll go to hell. She says, I'm the only person that makes her doubt.) This problem of forgiveness is disturbing to me. Say some words, feel the spirit, and pow, all your sins are forgiven. So easy, so silly. Of course, after you die you get to sit in the glory of your god. No, I don't believe in Jesus, and I don't believe, as someone said, that arrogance prevents me from accepting his forgiveness. I have to work every single day of my life to feel worthy. A few nicely planted words just don't do it for me. I think my actions have far-reaching effects and I strive to make them positive actions, without any invisible man in the sky looking at me. That's all I can do. If I get to fly in the sky with this guy, great. If not, I've tried my best to be as good a human as I can.

This is the struggle many of my evangelicals friends face: wanting to advance a Christian worldview. Yet on the other hand, not wanting to force or coerce beliefs on their people.

Rabbi, that was quite well thought out and well written -- especially how you divorce conduct from blind faith. Mohler, on the other hand, appears to be one who seeks to take advantage of a person's weakened emotional condition to proselyte. In this case, given the high news profile of the Weiner scandal, his moralizing may resonate with others who have transgressed against a spouse and society's rules of social conduct. More converts = more pennies in the collection plate. You may kindly claim that Mohler is a warm, respectful person. To me, he is downright cynical, cold and calculating.

Rabbi, you equate faith with belief. Biblical faith, whether in the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament, is not the same as belief. Biblical faith is a total committment to God and what God commands, like the faith of Abraham whose committment to God resulted in his becoming the father of nations. This is the faith which was accounted to him as righteousness--not merely his belief that God exists. True faith in Jesus for a Christian likewise means total committment to him and his gospel. But you are right in concluding that Weiner's actions rather than any belief he professes make him moral or immoral. You agree with Jesus that the injured party must grant forgiveness, which is why Jesus taught us to pray, "Forgive us...as we forgive." And Jesus taught, "Whoever's sins you forgive are forgiven, and whoever's sins you hold bound are held bound." Too many evangelicals teach that faith (meaning for them belief) alone is all that is needed for salvation. That is not a correct understanding of either the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament.

I agree with what you've written. However time will tell.
Appapently the HPost doesn't have a problem with someone mentioning the Bible, or even from time to time the name of Jeus Christ.
But they obviously have have VERY strong objection,to anyone who is a Jewish Disciple of Jesus Christ the Messiah to the Nation of Israel!
Either they don't understand it or the "little man behind the curtain" is a Jew.
I quess they'll have to come out from the curtain and let me know!

Well, Rabbi that's fundamentalism for you. I'm sure you can find something in your own fate that relates.

To the HPost
HOW DARE YOU! print JUST THE p.s. giving my article a WHOLE different meaning!
If you don't print the entire thing, I will realize who "the little man" is behind the curtain and leave HPOST immediately!
You say your paper doesn't exclude ANYONE because of their beliefs. WHAT A LIE!!

From a righteously ANGRY Jewish Disciple of Jesus Christ

HOW DARE YOU!!!!

Yipes! Histrionics over "your article" (???). Actually, it was the Rabbi's article. Your contribution, like mine and everyone else's, was just a comment, and subject to editing.

So, Bye. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. . .and don't trip over all those capital letters. . .

Rabbi Boteach, have you read Psalm 51? How could David ask forgiveness from the man he'd had murdered? Have you and brother Mohler read Psalm 130: "There is forgiveness with Thee, that Thou mayest be feared"? Mohler offered the 1st, and you insist on the 2nd; you both have a point (and each of you may tend to neglect the other's point.). Have you read Isaiah 6? If the prophet Isaiah was a "man of unclean lips," are you sure, really sure, you're righteous enough for triune Jehovah? (OK, "Jehovah" may be lousy Hebrew, but it's good English.)
And I suppose you have children. If someone wanted to be your friend while denying their existence--if he refused to enter your house if your son answered the door--would he really be your friend? Jesus said, "No man cometh unto the Father but by Me." Faith expresses itself in action--a man's deeds reveal what he really believes--but for some purposes, at least of analysis, they can be distinguished.
Can love top "God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners Messiah died for us" (Romans 5)? Can power top "...and that he rose again the third day" (I Corinthians 15) in the face of the religious system and the only superpower of those days? Yes, we need Jesus.

That's all well and good but the Jews don't ascribe to the New Testament. The Torah is what they follow which is essentially the first five books of Moses.
08:39 PM on 06/18/2011
It's an oversimplification to say that the Jews don't ascribe to the New Testament. There are a great many Jews who believe the New Testament, my maternal grandma being one of them.
And I find it hard to believe that Mr. Wiener follows any kind of religious or moral code. That's his business, though, not mine.

I think that Albert Mohler just proved the hypocrisy of Chritianity! Has he done anything about all the so called evangelicals in Congress that have done the same or worse?
08:42 PM on 06/18/2011
Even if Mr. Mohler is being hypocritical (your opinion), it doesn't therefore prove that Christianity, i.e., the teachings of Jesus, are hypocritical. That's bad logic.
11:59 AM on 06/21/2011
What exactly is he supposed to do about them? Can he singlehandedly remove them from office? Can he 'make' them not be hypocrites? Strange how 'personal responsibility' is all well and good to cite when they're judging others, but they can't be bothered to be responsible for themselves.

P.S. One of these days I'm going to learn to use the preview button.
What I meant to say was that the "ministers" are in NO position to give "counsel" to ANY Jew!
I'm STILL a Jewish Disciple of Jesus Christ.

This article is shot from the hip and right on target. Getting right with God involves hard behavioral work in this instance. Weiner needs to rely on his religious background and listen to the rabbi's advice and counsel.

Wow you didn't approve my biblical fact base comment. Guess only the far left gets to post on this equal opportunity site for debate of freedom of speech.
04:01 PM on 06/18/2011
The Bill of Rights provides that the government shall not abridge the people's right to Freedom of Speech. There is no such inclusion for private enterprises -- I don't have to listen to your speech, or provide a platform for it unless I am an agent/representative of the government in some way. And neither does HuffPost.

I guess only the far left have read the Constitution (and it's amendments).

And by the way, it seems that a goodly amount of your stuff got printed -- virtually all of which I disagree with.

What a wonderful refreshing article I am stuggling with what happened because I so admired him and his courage in defending the poor and middle class. You have made me feel better thanks

Amen Rabbi!
Also, for the record, I agree that evangelical preachers should not try to proselytize without exploring their own humility. After all, Jesus himself hung out with prostitutes.
05:19 PM on 06/17/2011
And Jesus himself converted those prostitutes and commanded his disciples to do the same.
12:01 PM on 06/21/2011
How many prostitutes have been converted lately? Oh right, they've simply been paid. Perhaps they should be charging 30 shekels of silver for their services.

Hung out with, not condoned nor partaken in their sins
