Sure, contemporary Americans are crazy about dogs, indulging their dogs with everything from daycare (with cameras) to reiki (via phone), dressing them in tutus and cooking them organic muffin treats.

But dog insanity didn't start yesterday, as these vintage photos attest. They were dressing dogs up like people a hundred years ago and training them to perform decades before America's Got Talent. Presidents have long lavished outsized attention on their dogs, while the dogs themselves pulled milk carts and fought at the front lines.

So were people crazier about their dogs back then or are they crazier now? You tell me.
