No news is good news, at least in terms of Iraq, where it's not bad news, which is the only type of news, notwithstanding the rationalizations of Howard Kurtz. We noted this on the "Eat The Press" People Ranker last Tuesday (July 18th); this was the graph that accompanied. That same day, the New York Times reported that gunmen had killed "dozens" at a Shi'ite market in Iraq; that was also the first full newsday after Bush's unguarded utterance was captured at the G-8 summit.

Today is Day 18 of the war, and there's no sign of "Israel/Lebanon" fatigue just yet — which is good, now more than ever we need a vigilant media (especially on the eve of vacation time in Washington). But there is more going on in the world, and — fatigue or no, flashy CNN graphics notwithstanding — it's all news. We've just got to remember that it's there.
