Si hay un individuo que personifica el triunfo en Estados Unidos, es el multimillonario de origen cubano, Félix Sabatés, quien llegó al país siendo un adolescente y superando todos los obstáculos se convirtió en una de las personas más acaudaladas de Carolina del Norte.
La historia de Sabatés comienza con una niñez opulenta en Cuba, antes de la revolución, y pasa a un exilio en Estados Unidos, a los 15 años, a donde llegó literalmente con una mano atrás y otra adelante.
Siendo el mayor de siete hermanos, le tocó trabajar inicialmente lavando platos y ollas en un hospital, para después trabajar como un obrero en una fábrica de muebles para contribuir al sostenimiento de la familia.
La leyenda dice que estacionaba y lavaba automóviles en el aeropuerto de Charlotte, para posteriormente convertirse en vendedor de vehículos de un concesionario.
Poco tiempo después vendría la gloria. Sabatés se vincularía como vendedor de una empresa, de la que terminó siendo propietario.
Sabatés tuvo la iluminación para poner el mercado productos que marcaron historia en Estados Unidos, como los juegos de Atari, Pac Man, Nintendo y Super Mario Bros.
Igualmente, estuvo tras la producción y distribución de las computadoras Compac, como una alternativa al monopolio que ejercían los ordenadores de IBM.
La empresa llegó a tener más de 12 billones de dólares en ventas anuales.
Siendo ya un multimillonario, Sabatés, invirtió en el sector de los deportes, llevando a Charlotte algunos de sus clubes profesionales.
Fue coautor de la existencia de la franquicia del equipo de baloncesto de los Hornets de Charlotte, y después de los Bobcats. También impulsó al equipo de hockey de los Checkers.
Pero su pasión deportiva han sido las carreras de autos de NASCAR. La vinculación de Sabatés con lo óvalos data de la década de los ochenta y actualmente es copropietario de la escudería de Ganassi.
El cubado ha sido reconocido como un filántropo que ha hecho aportes a la Universidad de Elon y al Colegio Universitario Belmont Abbey, en Carolina del Norte.
Sabatés hace parte de varias juntas directivas de instituciones de salud y educación.
Registrado como republicano, fue el único latino presente en una cena de recaudación de fondos para una de las campañas del expresidente George W. Bush, en el centro de convenciones de Charlotte a la que acudieron más de mil donantes, que pagaron más de mil dólares por un paquete de papas fritas, unas nueces y dos pedazos de chocolate.
Lo entrevisté, sirviendo de "freelance" para Univisión, cuando contrató al piloto Juan Pablo Montoya, para que compitiera en NASCAR.
Nos llevó al camarógrafo Eduardo Chávez y a mi por los vericuetos del taller de su escudería, donde no había una gota de aceite en el piso que era de color blanco.
El año pasado en el inicio de la temporada de carreras de NASCAR, me dijo que la clave para atraer el mercado hispano a los autódromos era encontrando un piloto mexicano que fuera exitoso.
Este año volví al tour de NASCAR en Concord, y cuando llegué a la mesa, en que dialogaba con los periodistas, lo escuché hablar de su dura experiencia de su juventud, de la opresión que se vive en Cuba y de lo grandioso que es este país.
Dado que estaba tocando temas sociales, le pregunté sobre la situación de los jóvenes indocumentados amparados por la acción diferida, a los que el estado de Carolina del Norte les ha estado negando la expedición de licencias de conducir.
Le dije que muchos de esos muchachos tendrían 15 años, como los 15 que él tenía cuando llegó al país.
Me quedé de una pieza cuando me respondió que no tenían derecho a los permisos de manejar y que a sus padres los deberían deportar.
