From Writing Quietly to Screaming "Buy Me!" -- Promoting a Book

Love me! Read me! Buy me!

Writing a book takes a certain set of skills: intense concentration, imagination, the ability to read the same 400 pages time after time, and the fortitude to take criticism (excuse me, ahem, critique) without weeping. You must learn to shut out all noise at a given moment and you must love solitude.

Getting your book in reader's hands requires the opposite: writing in 140-character soundbites, talking about oneself while sounding modest, balancing online me! me! me! without having REGO (readers eyes glaze over) or worse, RSOY (readers sick of you.)

Anyone who has read the hysterical, but frighteningly close to the truth, New Yorker piece on promotion knows how much falls on the writer these days. (Surprisingly few readers know this; at a recent book club, members were shocked to learn writers did their own promotion.) Even if one has great and supportive publicists, much of the responsibility for getting that book read is on the writer.

"You have to sell it one book at a time," my agent warned me.

How was I supposed to do that? I pictured myself walking door to door with a box of books slung around my neck in the manner of nightclub cigarette girls of yore. In terror, I read every book I could find (thus buying their books), listened to experienced writers, attended forums on promotion, jumped from one online site to another, lurked in online forums (and finally came out of the closet and wrote sad plaintive pleas on same forums) and, in short, thus tried to get a cheap fast Masters in SMB (selling my book.)

The problem is this: except for the most ego-driven or ego-protected among us, it's an unnatural position for most writers. We like working in pajamas. We like watching sentences unfold as ideas unfurl. We don't like shaking our booties.

But to sell, we must.

This is the uncomfortable truth. If you want to follow your fantasy of writing and publishing, then you gotta shake that booty. You must learn how to sell without appearing crazed -- because nobody likes the snake oil man. You must swallow your pride and put it out there--Look, I wrote a book! Want to buy it? -- without coming across as greedy, crazed, or so entranced by yourself that people back away in horror.

None of us succeed all the time. Once I got an email from the moderator of an online alumni group to which I belong. I'd sent out a group email inviting members to a reading I'd be giving in NYC, and received this squirm-inducing scold: Usually I try not to use the XYZ Group for personal promotion. Please refrain in the future.

Shame overcame me as my self-image went from energetic-information-sharer to self-promoting-hussy. I imagined whispers in the online hallways: Who does she think she is? God, enough, already. Will she ever shut up about that damn book?

But they said I have to, I whine.

Yeah. It's hard out there for a pimp. But, I remind myself: this is my dream. Suck it up, self. So here's my advice for writer-friends and my pleas to reader-friends:

Readers: Forgive us each day our daily shilling. It's the only game in town these days. And if you have it in your hearts, and you like our books, please pass the word along. If you really love it, write a review on Amazon or B&N or Goodreads. You can't believe how much it means.

Writers: Don't overdo it online. Talk about other books besides your own. Find a launch buddy or two. Or three. Someone with whom you can be as whiny and self-pitying as you need, someone who won't judge you for it. BFF launch sisters and brothers. Make sure it's someone you can truly root for and who will totally root for you. Know that sometimes she'll be ahead of you. That's okay -- keep rooting. That's what sisters and brothers do for each other.

Most important, learn, learn, and learn more. And then remember, no one can do it all. When promoting, pick that which excites you, or at the very least, engages you the most. Passion attracts. Sullen shuffling, not so much.

Thanks for this, Randy! This is a discussion we need to keep having, so that when the occasional grump sends out an email like the one you quoted ("Please refrain from in the future") we can politely reply: A lot of people are interested. If you aren't, then just ignore.
I also loved your point about talking about other writers, not just yourself: I think that's very important. We need to start and continue more of a dialogue on books, all books, which matter more than ever at at time when peoples' attentions span seems to diminish by the day. Books over a reprieve from that. Earlier today, I posted a link to an article about Jennifer Egan and "Good Squad" at my Facebook page. Last week I wrote here at Huff Post about giving technology a rest sometimes. I don't think we need to apologize for wanting to encourage people to clear out some time and allow themselves the pleasure of serious blocks of time alone with a great book - or even a good book.

Nice, funny column about a dilemma I and many other writers face. Don't have the personal skill set to shill the book, fear it will be DOA if shilling doesn't ensue. Also chagrined b/c it seems like every author in the world is online selling, selling, selling their books. Who in the world can be reading if most of us literate/literary types are either writing or selling our own?

I appreciate also the helpful links for writers in this predicament. I find it easier to watch an author shill if there is "value-added' to her spiel. The best writer blogs tend to do that--offer lots of solid advice in addition to helpful links to their Amazon book page.

I can't believe you expressed that vision of carrying the tray of books slung around your neck from door to door like a cigar girl in a club. I had that exact same idea recently on how to get my two self-published, and very well-liked, novels into the hands of a substantial amount of readers. Hell, why not? As one of my many odd jobs in past few years I worked for the 2010 US Census going door to door for the gov't, so why not for myself? It's not illegal! Maybe we can both try it at the same time and compare notes!!

In my more pensive moods I wonder why selling is so sneered at? In my stronger moods I get angry about it. It must be lovely to be in a sheltered financial position so that earning money by selling can be looked down upon. Yet if nobody 'sold' there would be very little to buy. Somebody has to do it. If they don't then nobody will know that the product exists. It may well be a fantastic product. In which case you are doing the world a favour by pointing it out to them.

Okay be cross about shoddy goods by all means. But sneering at someone who would prefer to pay their own way by working at getting their novel, poetry or other art noticed - is not on. It is snobbish and arrogant. Frankly I'd rather the life of a Fuller Brush man than the life of starving to death or going bankrupt. I think I'd rather it than a number of much more unpleasant ways of earning a living. There are even people who work in sewers. I respect them all. Anyone who is able to work for their living and who works for their living in a legal and honest manner should NEVER be anything but respected. Those who sneer are the ones I don't respect, because they show no respect.

[cont.]I’m trying not to be hard on those writers who feel they have a book in them, be it a formulaic harlequin or a formulaic memoir. Run it through the word processor, send it up the flagpole, twitter it around the blogsphere. If you win the lottery, good for you. But if the literary culture in this country is going to turn out MFA’s in creative writing like hot cross buns, I would hope they have more integrity than the MBA’s which dumped our economy into the sewers of the Magic Market. Selling has its price. There’s even a popular phrase for it: “selling out.â€

Caving in to the IS as though it is what has to be only leads authors and readers deeper into the sewers of hucksterism. Do you desire the life of the Fuller Brush man peddling shiny to shoddy goods to unsuspecting customers book after book? Hmmmm. I wonder what this degrading experience will do to your prose as you, in proper marketing fashion, "assess your customer's responses"? (And "customers" is what they are. Please don’t call them readers when this is how those who should be opening the pages of your book with curiosity and anticipation are being patronized and manipulated.) Is this what that MFA was all about? Is this what makes you think another degree, this time in Marketing, is the path of the true artist? Is this what makes for a vibrant, questing, contributing literary culture?

Publishers and their handmaids, literary (sic) agents, are responsible for the sad situation authors face. These are the powers that need to be reimagined, fixed, transformed. Use your skills of persuasion, your justified indignation, your powers of organization to confront this real problem. You'll feel better about it than making a personal sale of your book to your aunt Ginny.

Randy Susan Meyers is honest, witty, earnestly “helpful†but, in the final analysis, part of the problem. Authors and readers need to be asking why these ugly and deserving to be dismissed or ignored statements in Meyers' piece, are true today:

Thanks for the check into reality article and the resources. I hope to be facing this challenge in the coming year. I'm up for it... I think.

Apparently I possess the odd combination of loving solitude as I write, but otherwise, feel very comfortable engaging the public one-on-one or in large groups. Apparently all that is left is to complete the book and pray 'they' find it deserving of a shilling or two... or better yet, two hundred.
