Only a small handful of cities in the United States have a vegetable garden just outside their city hall. Most have either grass or concrete, or both. Last year in Portland, Oregon, volunteers pulled out the lawn, brought in the tiller, shovels, rakes, and vegetable starts and created a permanent garden in the front courtyard of City Hall. This year they celebrated its success by giving the garden a permanent name.

Partly what makes this such a winner is not only does it provide food for seniors, through Loaves and Fishes, it also brings awareness about growing food. A small space, some sun, good soil, seed, water, and care will provide a bounty that feeds us. If possible for you, consider growing some food yourself: in the yard, community garden, yardsharing, or container gardening. It's always good to know where your food comes from, and growing it yourself has its own personal rewards!
