Victory for Forests: Disney Stands Up for Endangered Forests and Animals

Posted: 10/11/2012 3:36 pm

Today, Disney adds its significant voice to the growing chorus of companies demonstrating that there's no need to sacrifice endangered forests in Indonesia or elsewhere for the paper we use every day. This entertainment giant, which is the world's biggest publisher of children's books and magazines, has adopted what may be one of the most far-reaching paper policies ever, including groundbreaking safeguards for the climate and human rights.

Full disclosure: Rainforest Action Network began working with Disney in 2010 after lab tests found that its children's books were printed with rainforest fiber from Indonesia. This policy is the culmination of two years of conversations with Disney executives.

In practical terms, this significant new paper policy means that Disney will be eliminating paper connected to the destruction of endangered forests and animals from its extensive operations and those of its licensees. It applies to both the way Disney sources and uses paper, reaching every corner of the company's business. The policy covers everything from the pages of a Marvel comic book in New York and the copy paper at ABC's headquarters in LA to the packaging of a Mickey doll sold in Moscow.

In the 21st century it is indefensible that any paper still comes from endangered rainforests. And yet, in places like Indonesia, which has one of the most biologically and culturally diverse forests in the world, the pulping of trees for paper is a part of why the country has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world. Conservatively, an estimated 2.5 million acres of rainforest are lost in Indonesia per year.

Thanks to this policy, Disney will be joining the growing list of major brands that have cut ties to notorious Indonesian rainforest destroyers and paper giants Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) and Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings (APRIL). Disney's commitment will reduce the demand for paper made at the expense of rainforests while creating incentives for improved forest management and green growth.

So, just how big is this announcement? For a bit of perspective, consider that Disney products are produced in almost 25,000 factories worldwide -- 10,000 in China alone. Disney owns a vast media empire, including media networks such as ABC and ESPN alongside studios including Pixar and Touchstone, and is the largest licensor of toys and the largest operator of theme parks in the world. All that takes a LOT of paper -- none of which can be connected to the destruction of endangered forests and animals in Indonesia or elsewhere.

What excites me most about Disney's commitment is its depth, affirming that the company will avoid not only tropical deforestation, but also go above and beyond to protect human rights and to recognize the high carbon value of rainforests -- two things rarely seen in policies of this kind.

Join me in thanking Disney for taking this stand. It is time every company acknowledge that rainforests are more valuable left standing than being pulped for paper!

None whatsoever to the people in Indonesia. They will still harvest the forest and sell it to the same people they have always sold it to...Disney or no disney...wont make a jot of difference to them. They still need to eat.

RAN SELLS OUT OLD GROWTH WITH LIE FSC IS SUSTAINABLE
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is highly dependent upon first time industrial primary forest logging to meet market demand. So Rainforest Action Network's (RAN) announcement Disney
will now use FSC certified paper in no way stops 60 million year old naturally evolved forests from being turned into Disney packaging, only now there are greenwash claims it is sustainable. This is hardly reason to rejoice, as there is no reason to continue logging old growth forests in this age of mass extinction, abrupt climate change, and ecosystem collapse. They probably feel no remorse from the result of the massive forest decimation from Palm Oil plantations being continuously expanded. Indonesia, blessed with vast natural resources, unparalleled cultural diversity, and beauty beyond description while cursed by the most despotic corrupt politicians on Earth.

DO NOT BUY PALM OIL PRODUCTS!!!

Concern for the world forests is like being vegan. You can't be sure you have eliminated all the bad stuff from the things you use every day, but you can act in good faith and you can make a difference.

I have issues with Disney in other aspects of their corporate behavior, but they get due credit for this initiative. Well done.

There are places that need more protection than Indonesia! Why has Disney singled out Indonesia? This is just another attack on APP by environmentalists who have tricked Disney into being their weapon. Just because the environmentalists need to focus their efforts to ensure their resources aren't divided doesn't mean a corporation like Disney should join in. Indonesia is one of the places where forestry standards are improving due to huge investments from government and companies like APP. Policies like this can destroy all that good work. Disney has been duped. Ooooops.

The oldest rainforests and second most expansive on the planet, the greatest distribution of highest coral species, the greatest diversity of fish species, six of the highest species diversity hotspots on the planet, myriad new species of animals discovered every year, minorities with a healthy respect for natural resource sustainability, the richest cultural diversity on the planet that is dependent on those natural resources, the single largest equatorial national park in the world, regions that stretch from coastal mangrove through several distinct rainforest type to cloud forest and equatorial glaciers in less than 120 miles, ....

Seriously which Indonesia are you referring to? Certainly not the one in Asia!

Forestry initiatives in Indonesia are abysmally the worst on Earth. Between palm oil plantation development and the system of paternalism in signing forest concessions over to one single crony and friend of the most corrupt politicians in the world .... the future of this highly populated nation is doomed without strong sustainable forest use practices being implemented.

That was excellent! The bill on endangered forest in The United States of America and endangered animals in The United States of America is ridiculous. The effort to motion being successful along with the expression of improvement, is prominent.

It is refreshing to see corporate interest in safeguarding the planet. It also shows that (at least) one corporate giant can move to a greener way of doing business without resorting to whining about their bottom line.
