The Ethiopian troops today left Mogadishu, effectively turning control of Somalia over to Islamic fundamentalists. In 1992, George H.W. Bush left office with Mogadishu on fire, and Bill Clinton with the problem of putting that fire out. Now, sixteen years later, George W. Bush is leaving with Mogadishu aflame. I hope Barack Obama will be more successful in handling the situation than President Clinton, but the situation in Somalia, witness the piracy, has gotten so much worse over the past eight years, that our new President will have his hands full.
