Ralph Fertig, MLK Freedom rider rejected as Obama delegate.

With all the talk about bitter and angry small town folks, the cities of Malibu and Bel Air are being overlooked. These tony L.A. enclaves have their share of bitter and angry folks, too. Clinging less perhaps to guns and religion and more to brisk Chablis and vintage Birken bags, they nonetheless know pain. I got to experience that pain this weekend when I, along with 899 other delegate wannabes, gathered at various sites throughout the state to select our Congressional district delegates. It was a whirlwind of a week, beginning with Thursday's kerfuffle, where 900 names statewide and 80 plus from my CD were scrubbed by the Obama campaign from its list of delegate candidates. We were on, then we were off, then back on. What an emotional roller coaster!

On Sunday I met my other 89 delegate hopefuls for the 30th CD of California. They were a varied group -- as varied as rich, highly educated Jews can be, with the exception of three blacks, two wheelchairs, and one queen, who declared he wanted to go to Denver to party with the other gays and Lesbians "who are down with Obama." And who doesn't?

With all the purging and re-instating of candidates, it was no surprise there was a bit of confusion and angst on Sunday. I heard some scuttlebutt-- that three candidates who promoted themselves by calling from a list of names that was used to get out the vote on Super Tuesday, and that these three candidates were telling people they had been endorsed by the Obama camapign and were the hands-on favorites to win. More than half of the candidates didn't show up, and those of us who did knew our efforts were for naught after we learned these three had used the political machine to blanket our district with emails and robo-calls.

I feverishly worked the lines of blase latte liberals, with their Starbucks in hand. One by one, they waved me off, as they mockingly showed me post-its with the names of the chosen three. "I got a call from the Obama campaign, these are the ones I'm voting for."

I began to feel like the loser I knew I was going to be, and tried to find comfort in the great people that I met campaigning, and the delegate candidates, the other losers, and the fact that we will have one minute to make a final pitch. I was once again deflated when I learned that our one minute speeches were cut to 30 seconds.

Some officious college student held up pieces of yellow construction paper with "15" and "DONE" printed on them, flashing them at 15-second intervals. The speeches were what you would expect, Obama mating calls. There was an exception: Octogenarian Ralph Fertig in a faint voice began to relate that he was a freedom rider who marched with Martin Luther King Jr. At that point, the time keeper waved the "DONE" sign and another manners-challenged undergrad grabbed the microphone out of Fertig's hand and proceeded to usher him off the stage. I stood up and yelled, "Let him speak!" The collegiate fawns stared blankly for direction. I continued to yell, "Let him speak," until the crowd joined in and the student returned the microphone to Fertig, went on to relate how he had marched with MLK as a freedom rider and that he teaches at USC. I was convinced he would be a great rep for the 30th CD and had my vote.

I noticed that none of the three politicking favored delegate candidates stood up to protest the bum rush the college kids were giving Fertig. They looked smug and assured that they would be going to Denver.

Another man got up and said his name was Paul Carpenter, that he was Barack's college roommate, at Occidental college, more than twenty years ago. Barack hadn't changed since college, he said, which wasn't the most reassuring news to me then, after having just witnessed how inflexible and disrespectful college students can be. "He was always a nice guy," Carpenter said about Obama.

***
We never received an email from The CA Democratic party telling us who won, or thanking us for our efforts, but we did receive a request to donate to the Party and to the Obama campaign. I learned today from the CA Democratic website that the special three had indeed won in the 30th CD, beating out Mr. Fertig, the MLK freedom rider, and Mr Carpenter, Barack's roommate.

Two people from the 28th CD I received a robo-call instructing me to vote for, also won.

Am I bitter or angry? Not bitter or angry, but disappointed that an old man who has worked for social justice will not represent my CD at the convention, and that three people who stood by and said nothing while he was being disrespected, will be.

***
UPDATE: Mr. Fertig sent me an email,

Dear Reny,

Thank you for your thoughtful and sensitive reference to me, but I am really just a septuagenarian.

I have not yet determined whether I should seek at-large status. I think it is vastly more important for younger people like you to take up the torch, and I am thrilled that Obama's candidacy has energized you.

For it is you, in the ranks of his campaign who must exercise the independence of spirit that makes his race the phenomenon it is and which generates the hope it offers.

Clinical Associate Professor
University of Southern California
School of Social Work

Two wheelchairs? These are people you are referring to, right? People with disabilities do not lose their status as people when they aquire a wheelchair. Please try to show more judgement choosing your words.

I think the people that are so upset that they didn't get to go to Denver that they need to post about it need to cry me a river of tears. When they are done they need to suck it up and realize that this is not about ourselves. This is about the good we can do in the lives of our fellow citizens. We have a long road ahead in this campaign.

It was terribly tempting to ask the throng of johnny-come-lately folks like you that only decided to show up when it became time to pick delegates, "Where the fuck have you been? We really could have used your help when we were trying to win California for Obama." But in the end, it didn"t really matter. The people who won, were the people who had the most support from people who KNEW them. And more people knew them because they have been there. They showed up. They"re still showing up.

So instead of asking, "Where have you been?" I"d like to invite you to a phone bank/barbeque we"re having this weekend in North Hollywood Park for GOTV in Pennsylvania. It"s never too late to get involved. We"ll be in the same spot we"ve been in for the past 4 weekends for our PA barbeque for Barack. Hope to see you there.

Or maybe you could just write blog about it.

The one thing that scared everyone the most about picking delegates is that the Clinton campaign would do just what it said they would do and try to convince pledged delegates to switch. From my standpoint, the best way to know who would not switch " no matter what " was to ask myself, "who has sacrificed the most to make Barack Obama the Democratic nominee?" "Who has put in the time? Who has spent their own money on clipboards, pens, pizza, coffee, smartphones, wireless routers, and campaign swag? Who sacrificed in terms of time with their spouse or kids or time that could have been spent furthering their careers? Who did the grunt work?" Because those are the people who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment. The answer was easy.

You sound like someone from that sect in Texas. It's not about Obama. It's about the next 4 years!

I"m pretty sure everyone who signed up to be a delegate is probably an ardent Obama supporter. I"m pretty sure that none of them would cave if Bill Clinton personally tapped them on the shoulder at the convention and said, "I"ll destroy your career if you don"t vote for Hillary." I"m pretty sure the guy at the CD 28 caucus who said he taught with Barack at the University of Chicago actually did. I"m pretty sure that the couple who said they had raised over $100,000 for his campaign and were on his finance committee were who they said they were.

But, you know who I voted for? I voted for the people I know. I voted for the people who have sat next to me for the past 8 months making phone calls and entering data for the campaign. I voted for the people who walked neighborhoods knocking on doors with me, for the people who traveled to Nevada on long weekends, set-up Barbeques, trained precinct captains, and attended Camp Obama with me.

Let"s get one thing straight.

Nobody "robo-called" you from CD 28.

How do I know? Because I"ve been a part of the all-volunteer California CD-28 team of the Obama campaign since August of 2007. I know personally the candidates that ran and won delegate spots in Denver -- the candidates that we, as a group of grassroots activists, decided would best represent us at the convention. I also know personally the people who went through lists of people-who-told-us-at-one-point-they-might-be-interested-in-volunteering and called them to ask for their support during the caucus. Surprise! It was a real person that called you, not a robot " a real person who took time out of his Saturday and used his free weekend minutes on his cell phone do something he thought was important. It"s called grassroots organizing. You might have read about it on a blog somewhere.

Here"s the thing. So sorry that your feelings were hurt because you didn"t get a ticket to the party in Denver, but this time it may not just be a party. This time it may (god forbid) actually be a delegate fight on the floor of the convention. It matters who we send.

Reny,

Every obama supporter can't make it to Denver. If you are truly after Obama's success, not making it to Denver should not make you write stuff like this.

Considering the dirty tricks that the Clinton camp has been trying with the pledged delegates, I will not blame BO campaign HQ for trying to play safe by selecting tested and trusted hands. I don't think it is meant to denigrate any supporter; it is called pragmatism. I don't want to believe that the reason why you were supporting Obama is only so that you can get to go to Denver.

I think this concept of BO supporters rushing here to complain each time they fail to make it as delegates need to stop. There are millions of us and only less than 2,000 can make it. Let us trust the HQ on this. From the way the campaign as been run from the beginning, I have to say that they've earned my trust.

Obama as President come January 2009. All else isn't important.

I agree Reny. I'm so turned off by folks whining when they aren't picked to go to Denver. They make the campaigns point. Is that all it takes for you to not only gripe in public but get on public forum and criticize the campaign. How selfish. Again good judgment displayed once again by the Obama campaign.

They need dedicated loyal folks who understand the goal that is trying to be achieved.

The delegate selection process is a little scary right now because of Clinton's threats to go after pledged delegates. I too am in California, and I too attended a caucus last weekend. I was planning to go, but then got a call from a fellow volunteer that rumors were flying that Hillary plants were working to put her supporters into Obama's delegate seats. It added urgency to getting to the caucus.

The person I supported, who has been working for the campaign for over a year and who has done so much work to build the campaign won by only 6 votes. This is someone who has sent emails to every volunteer in the district on a weekly basis.

Your situation does sound pretty crazy, but you have to give a bit of understanding to the people who voted based on calls they thought were from the Obama campaign itself. People have been really scared of being deceived...understandable from the tactics Clinton has been promoting.

Fourty five or so years ago, I was where Ralph Fertig is said to have been, not a delegate convention but organizing in Selma, Jackson, and my home town, best left unmentioned. There are unnecessary risks for those still at it. I do not recall knowing Fertig, but names and backgrounds were of little consequence then as now and neither traded nor noted. The knowing that counted was in the doing.

We who are old enough understand what many youth may not. What we were and are about was going on long before we arrived on the scene and will continue long after we are gone. All we can do is push things a little farther along toward yet unseen and probably shifting goals, those that goe beyond nominating an electoral candidate even if one in particular seems to symbolize a little of what we sought and seek.

Though neither Ralph nor I will note the other on convention TV, perhaps we might meet sometime (again?) down the line in the streets, doorways, and bars where real democracy is practiced.

I would concur. Young people need to take a deep breath, slow down, and LISTEN! The older generation, those who have learned by their own experience, have a lot to teach you, believe it or not. Have some respect.

The whole "college kids" slant to this post is bizarre. Yes, Barack inspires a lot of young people, but the people who were elected as delegates, indeed the entire make-up of the volunteer force is as diverse in age as it is in every other way.

More proof that Reny Monk has not been involved at all in the grassroots, volunteer effort to get Barack elected president.

Did you ever find out if those three people really were endorsed by the Obama campaign? That does not sound right. No one endorsed anyone for my district. Hope they weren't lying!

We had some college kids at our caucus also, a couple were running to be delegates. They were so sincere and sweet. We had 51 candidates so enthusiasm to go to Denver was very high. We had some great choices. It was hard to choose, but we ended up with some great delegates for Obama in Denver.

I'm sorry your experience was rather negative because mine was really positive. A lot of positive energy; a lot of unity.

To be clear: The volunteers ARE the campaign. This is what is so revolutionary about the way Barack is running. Yes, there is a headquarters with paid staff, but the field operation is comprised almost entirely of unpaid volunteers.

So, if someone called and said, "I'm the CD 30 Data Manager for Obama campaign and I supporting so-and-so. I hope you do too" there is nothing disingenuous about that. Of course the volunteers who did the hard work want to assure that someone they know will not switch to Hillary gets a delegate spot.

As W.C. Fields once said "anything worth having is worth cheating for." It sounds like some over zealous delegates found a way to get to Denver and all the rest of you got to donate to the "Party." So lets count the votes in Michigan and Florida and let the phone bank phonies stay home. I think Mr. Fertig should be allowed to go anyway. peace.

I'm a little curious. What makes one person a better candidate than another at being a delegate?Do you think you're a better candidate cos you were Barack's roomie back in college?
