12 Republican Myths That Are Killing Us

Posted: 03/02/2012 7:56 am

As the Republican demolition derby rolls on, I continue to be amused by how each remaining contender tries to assume the “small government” mantle.

Mitt Romney wants a government so small that it provides universal health care.

Newt Gingrich wants a government so small that it will establish a permanent base on the moon.

Rick Santorum wants a government so small that it will fit inside a woman’s uterus.

The only real remaining advocate of small government is Ron Paul.  Dr. Paul appears to be disqualified from the Republican presidential primary, however, because he is unwilling to drench himself with the blood of our imagined enemies, like Gerard Butler in the movie “300.”

But what about that Jon Huntsman guy?  This week three different people told me, quite independently of each other, how sorry they were that Governor Huntsman never gained any traction in the Republican presidential primary.

I told them that they should get over it.  Huntsman wasn’t any better.

It somehow counts as an act of courage for Huntsman to have tweeted:  “I believe in evolution.”  Of course, it would have been more courageous if Huntsman had said that to a Tea Party audience, and then they tore him limb from limb, thereby disproving the theory of evolution right before our eyes.

And evolution is not something that you “believe” or “disbelieve.”  Evolution is like gravity; it’s not like Santa Claus or the Abominable Snowman.  (Question:  Why do they both live at the North Pole?)

Be that as it may, neither Huntsman nor any other Republican presidential candidate has been willing to take on the hard myths.  The myths that are killing us.  Here are a dirty dozen, right off the top of my head:

(1) The government can’t create jobs.  (Tell that to FDR, who created four million jobs in three months.)

(2) Tax cuts reduce the deficit.  (Doesn’t it bother them that a man named “Laffer” came up with this one?)

(3) A fetus is a baby.

(4) The poor have too much money.

(5) Cutting the federal deficit will end the recession.

(6) The rich are incentivized by tax cuts, while the poor are incentivized by lower wages, no benefits, an end to the minimum wage, and unemployment.

(7) An unwanted child is God’s will.

(8) Everyone who wants health insurance has it.

(9) The problem with education is the teachers.

(10) The “free market” satisfies every human need.

(11) There is no discrimination in America anymore.

(12) The distribution of wealth and income are irrelevant.

I don’t remember Jon Huntsman disputing any of these myths.  And these are the ones that do the real damage.  Show me a candidate who is willing to take on these myths, and I’ll pay more attention.

Courage,

Alan Grayson

"The only real remaining advocate of small government is Ron Paul." Of course Mr. Grayson won't embrace Ron Paul because of that very fact. It would mean much less power for Washington, and Mr. Grayson and company (both Dems and GOP) will NEVER go along with that.

As for the "myths", please come up with some actual quotations from the current GOP crowd in Washington. While you're at it, please tell us your solution to each myth. Please be very specific, otherwise you're no better than all the other poltico/talking head/bloggers out there.

(1) Keynesian arguments like this tend to boil down to the broken window fallacy, the most persistent illogical thought that economics has ever known.
(2) They can, if it allows people and businesses to keep their earnings and invest it, thereby creating wealth.
(3) After a certain point, it is.
(5) It was tried after World War II. It worked very well.
(6) Not exactly, but the government does need to step back and allow the Darwinian evolution of the economy to occur.
(9) Actually, it is the unions.
(10) Not every need, but it does better than the unfree market.

(4) Liar, nobody ever said that....except Grayson.

(7) It is if you are of faith. Got a problem with that?

(8) Another lie, Everyone has access to health CARE by one program or another. Hell, the illegals aliens even get it for free.

Faith?  Oh you mean believing something is true despite the absence of evidence?  LOL  I should have known you were a b-thumper.

Cheers.  No wonder you're confused about what is truth, fiction, speculation, or opinion.

Interesting points... It's hardly fair to say that all Republicans think and feel this way when most of it is being spouted by fringe Republicans rather than the majority.

Fringe Republicans now control the majority opinion of the party. It is fair to say that most Republicans think and feel this way. This is GOP orthodoxy.

Based on what we've seen, perhaps a small government is all the GOP are capable of running. That is.... if they were running it because of all the favors they'll owe, based of all the money they've taken once they get there....if they do. To go against their donors would mean they would probably be assasinated. Therefore, the future of our country looks bIeak and I hope the American people are way smarter than to put our country and it's citizens at slave status. The GOP platform is a far cry from "Justice For Everybody That Harms Nobody".

The myth list forgot many more, including:

- Women are inferior to men in every way, and therefore, are made to be man-servants in every way. Eve was created to keep Adam company - he even lost a rib over the deal - not the other way around - and don't forget, Eve, another human, was seduced by a talking snake, and then seduced Adam into eating the forbidden produce - Adam would never be seduced by a talking snake since he was morally and intellectually superior to his rib-woman - only the female temptress, woman, would disobey a direct order from God. For this, they will suffer the pains of labor, be shunned in every-way possible for sending humanity east of Eden, and tempting men into sexual frenzies - where men are entitled to rape women since women are subservient to him and don't even possess any rights, even over their physical body - which is ultimately for the possession and use of men - after-all, human females are made of a part of man's personal rib cage. From this understanding of what human females are, men and only men can decide what she is allowed to do, wear, or say (which should be nothing beyond, "how may I serve you today, Master?")

Not surprisingly, the article falls into the trap of dumping all Republicans into one bucket, which is no more true than saying that all Democrats believe in socialism--of course that's not true, so why should this list be true? There are things on it, certainly that define the conservative inclination, but other things that do not. It also conflates social and economic conservatism which, for many of us, are to be thought of very differently.

Bottom line: op eds like this do nothing to further the conversation; snark has been tried--and more cleverly than this--and it doesn't get us very far.

Conversation? Bi-partisanism? We've just had four years of Republicans sticking together to purposely obstruct any program presented to them, and they cared not how what they were doing affected the American people. Their devotion was to corporations and the wealthiest in this country. Selfishness and greed are their platform. The only mantra we've heard from them is....tax breaks for the rich. Denial is not just a river in Egypt. The GOP is so far away from "Justice For Everybody That Harms Nobody" that it isn't even within the fabric of their conscience to conceive of that.
02:52 PM on 03/02/2012
They aren't myths, they're lies. You left out the biggest lie #1. Corporations are people too.

i agree with all of these except "A fetus is a baby." in the majority of christians' views, a fetus is a baby. the point of personhood for a baby is an opinion and issue of debate, but don't try to make the point that it is an undisputable fact that a fetus is not a baby. it may not be a full grown baby, and can't survive on it's own, but neither is a born baby a full grown human and can't survive on its own either. i respect varying opinions, but this is an opinion, not a fact.
03:49 PM on 03/02/2012
I always wonder why they make t-shirts that say "Baby on Board" rather than "Fetus on Board"
04:17 PM on 03/02/2012
The word fetus describes an embryo that has not yet matured into a baby. So, yea, it IS an indisputable fact. And trying to create controversy by redefining the words of the English language is what makes it a myth.

Any other questions?

Wow, a politician willing to live in the real world. I just wish all the hateful rhetoric would end and be replaced with rational discussion.

1. Small government, like the foot of a vaccuum cleaner salesman holding open a door someone is trying to close, was the Repubs opening line to restrict government from restricting what Capitalists can get away with.

2. Santa Claus and the Abonimable Snowman are said to live at the North Pole because no one can verify that they exist/don't exist that way. Which makes it doubly unfortunate that a copy of Obama's Kenyan birth certificate is there as well (Santa would have given it to the Repubs for Christmas, but, well, they were bad again this year).
02:20 PM on 03/02/2012
Straw man argument. No reasonable repub;icans believe half of that. How about "deficits don't matter"?

I love Alan Grayson. Funny, there are still repubs that believe these myths or even more surprising, don't think that the Repubs are saying these things. Thats the 23% that always thought Bush was a good President (as Norm says illegitimate, occupier of the White House). I imagine they are the same 23% that think the Sun revolves around the earth.

Does 1 person who claims to be a Republican saying any 1 or more of the above listed myths make it true that all Republicans believe all of the myths listed above? Nope. You can't lump all people who consider themselves conservative as Big Bad Republicans. I think you are looking for a scapegoat... So according to this link, all of you Democrats/Liberals (one and the same right?) believe in all this population control and other aspects of the culture of death?
