15 Members of Congress Speak Out: End the War in Afghanistan

Posted: 07/19/2012 12:29 pm

Today, 14 of my colleagues from both parties joined me in speaking out against the war in Afghanistan.

As I said in my remarks, I'm not convinced there is any light at the end of the tunnel. I'm not convinced that this war is coming to an end.

Congress is deeply complicit in maintaining and continuing the war, but if enough members join our voices, maybe an end to this travesty can be in sight.

15 members. 90 minutes. 1 mission.

We are in a no-win situation in Afghanistan. If we "cut and run" too early and the Taliban/Al Qaeda strikes us or any of our allies again, what would Representative McGovern and his bipartisan group would be saying, "why did this President listened to them, a leader is supposed to do what he thinks is best and not what is popular." When George Bush sent the troops to Afghanistan and throughout his administration, all I heard was, "Let's stay and finish the job!" Now that this President has almost decimated Al Qaeda, the drumbeat now is, Let's cut and run!" My advice to Mr. McGovern is, "Listen to your President/Comamnder-In-Chief and lets finish the job" Let's follow the timeline negotiated by President Bush and completed by President Obama and make sure that Al Qaeda never have a safe haven to launch an attack against us anymore.

The invasion of Afghanistan was based on a lie. Those allegedly responsible for 9/11 didn't even come from Afghanistan. bin Laden was created by the US, who lived in Pakistan for years. Why didn't the US ask Mushareff about him? bin Laden is dead; Afghanistan is a basket case; Taliban members, war lords, drug lords and others make up the so-called Afghan Govt, so what's it all about? Why didn't Bush just send a drone to get rid of bin Laden years ago? Before thousands if not more Afghanis were killed, maimed and orphaned? There's no concern for the civilians. They're treated as non-persons! I find it sickening!
