From Driving While Black to Presiding While Black

Posted: 08/28/2012 2:08 pm

In the 1990s, four young Black and Latino men on their way to a basketball game in the state of New Jersey suddenly became the victims of a police shooting that nearly ended their lives. I was among those in the civil rights leadership that raised the country's awareness on the outrageous policing practice of racial profiling which systematically singled out minority drivers and disproportionately pulled them over on America's roadways.

Through my organization, National Action Network, and the work of folks like the late Johnnie Cochran, we were able to show that motorists of color were overwhelmingly harassed, asked to produce their papers and prove that they in fact owned their vehicles as opposed to them being stolen. While pushing for reforms, we popularized the phrases 'racial profiling' and 'driving while Black.' Well today, we have our first Black president in office and much like minorities behind the wheel, he is being asked to produce his papers. We somehow went from driving while Black to presiding while Black.

Yesterday on my program Politics Nation, my MSNBC colleague Chris Matthews and I engaged in a substantive conversation that brought home the fact that this President has been routinely disrespected, humiliated and treated like some sort of second-class citizen when he in fact is our Commander-in-Chief. As Chris and I highlighted, Romney and other leaders among the Republican Party have used catch phrases designed to 'other-ize' President Obama and incite age-old racial tensions. Asking for his birth certificate, calling him a socialist, stating that he doesn't understand the dignity of work, referring to him as a food stamp President or a welfare President and more, these politicians and pundits know exactly how their racially-charged words will stir fear among their base. It's politics at its worst, but we must remember that words have severe consequences.

When Willard Mitt Romney says 'no one's ever asked to see my birth certificate,' we know what he's really implying. When he makes statements indicating that the President doesn't understand America or has a European/'foreign-type of policy', we know what picture he's attempting to paint. When people attack his programs as expanding the federal government, and openly use buzz words like 'socialist,' we know that this is designed to ignite the flames of racial tensions in this country that have unfortunately not disappeared with the election of a Black President. As Chris himself passionately said yesterday, it's pretty obvious what's going on; it's awful and it's consistent.

In 2008, when John McCain was the presumptive nominee for the GOP, he made it a point to quell the vitriol and misinformation spewing from others within his Party and from members of the public. At his now infamous town hall event, where a member of the audience said Barack Obama was a Muslim (as if being a Muslim were a bad thing), McCain quickly corrected the individual and rectified the tone in the area. And on election night, while conceding to President Obama, McCain once again squashed the anger and malicious statements that some in the crowd began yelling. He understood that society and the future of our country were more important than fueling ethnic divides that would only set us apart. It's unfortunate that today's GOP leaders don't follow in his footsteps.

Anyone, whether they be Republicans or Democrats, has the right to criticize this President. My contention is that people have the open ability to hold him accountable based on the merits and based on the record. But when he is subjected to a standard that we've never held another President to, is made to respond to things that we've never asked another President to respond to, and treated in a manner that no other President has ever been treated in the history of the United States, many of us understand precisely what's taking place. Those of us that have been pulled over on the NJ turnpikes of America know what he's being asked to do. But just like we've worked to combat 'driving while Black,' we can help stop 'presiding while Black.'

IT IS ALMOST ONE MONTH FOR THE CHANGE TO BEGIN IN ADMINISTRATIONS IN WASHINGTON. DID YOU KNOW THAT IF BARACK OBAMA WERE TO RESIGN AT THIS POINT, JOE BIDEN WOULD BE PRESIDENT NUMBER 45? PLEASE DO NOT SAY THAT THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. WE WANT CHOICES, WE WANT OPTIONS AND THIS IS ONE. CONGRATULATIONS BARCLAYS, BUT, NO COMPETITION WITH STAPLES, PLEASE, THERE IS ENOUGH STARBUCKS FOR EVERYBODY.

I know nothing about being a black man or woman in America, and won't pretend to.

However, because my skin is white, I have had the uncomfortable experience of being the recipient of many a "wink-wink", "nudge-nudge" invitation to to laugh at a sly racist joke or nod at disguised bigot's rant.

I have more than enough experience to recognize those kind of word association games and veiled codes - and Romney's little birth certificate 'joke' was definately couched to be a wink and a nudge for the diversity-phobes with just enough deniability to claim indignation when caught.

We think that Ben Akelrod should resign from office because of his negrohood remark. What do you think?

Calling someone a socialist is not a racist remark. Take a look into history, socialist/communist leaders of the past were White. Socialism is a political belief, has nothing to due with skin color.

However Andrea not in the case of President Obama. The so called Republican Party truly hates the that a Nubian Man (black man) is the President of the United States. Most of them are rich whitemen that believes this Country can only be lead by they're kind Caucasians.

You didn't get it.. that's not what he said... he said that when it is said to President Obama..for doing some of the same things that other presidents has done it has an implication... So that when one person does something and it's okay. and another person does the same thing we called them a socialist.. why is that? He says it is because they are trying to "other'size" him.. making him seem not of this country.. along with testing his religion and asking for his birth record. It is not just the one but all things put together.

president obama has been disrespected and obstructed at a level that no president has ever experienced. he handles it with class and still manages to accomplish lots. after president obama's 8 years as president are up, he certainly will be the best president this great country has ever seen. michelle is great, too. so are sasha and malia. and, bo.

Are you kidding? Bush had it a lot worse then Obama ever had it. Even the Clinton's had a rough time in office. I don't condone anything that was said but it does come with the territory. Look at a 200 years of news articles and you will seen nobody had it easy. Obama doing a good/bad job or the criticism has nothing to do with being black.

The right realizes that blatantly using the N-word or just saying “but he’s black” against the president would turn off many Americans in the political center. Instead they have turned to relentlessly using code words that are disconnected to the reality of this president such as Socialist, Marxist, Hitler, not a US citizen and food stamps to name a few. Both the delusional right wing base and it’s victims understand this language. This course they chose is NOT, American Exceptionalism but it is exponentially its opposite.

TT87 Bush and Cheney sucked. The 2 of them along with most of the Republican Party cared only for the Rich in this Country.

"this President has been routinely disrespected..."
Like the unqualified, in-over-his-head president that we had before this unqualified, in-over-his-head president was treated any differently.

In eight long years of W, I NEVER heard anything like (google this and read):

Don't criticize the president because he is black thus you are a racist for calling him a socialist! We all know that criticism toward any black man is only due to underlying racism!! Fire up the base with racism Al!
09:55 AM on 08/29/2012
He speaks ugly, hard truth.

Get over it.
02:16 AM on 08/29/2012
If anyone cares to learn what is actually happening in the black community go to Project 21. No worries, Al isn't there.
01:31 AM on 08/29/2012
Al still thinks he is relevant and in touch as he makes 6 figures at MSNBC. While he sits in his time machine with Jesse, actual mainstream blacks such as the ones at Project21 are creating real education and awareness.
12:40 AM on 08/29/2012
Al. Now that you make 6 figures at MSNBC you don't have to pretend your relevant anymore. Just let real mainstream blacks like the ones at Project21 guide the way. You can stay in your time machine.

...well, Mr. Obama is certainly guilty of the charge of "presiding while incompetent, regardless of race"...
P.S. Al, that positively the most tortured attempt at "race-baiting" you have ever tried to sell.

Is Barack Obama the first Black President? Is he even Black? I say he's as much Black as he is White. But let's make the determination using the Gold Standard. That's right, we're gonna use Reparations as a measure.

Should Barack Obama be entitled to full Reparations because he is Black? Should he be entitled to half Reparations because his mother was White? Or should he be entitled to no Reparations because none of his ancestors were ever enslaved in the United States?

the reason president obama is "black" is because of his skin color. if a child was born to 2 white parents, in america, but for some reason this child's skin was "black", that child, even though technically white, is black.

If President Obama was running from the police instead of running for President, what would they call him?...."in pusuit of a ______ male. You fill in the blank
05:34 PM on 08/30/2012
"In pursuit of a male". Racial profiling is not permitted in most police departments.

Racial profiling helps to keep Big Business raking in Millions upon Millions of taxpayer dollars. Policing for profit has distorted our Judicial Process and Court Systems, making them tools for Wall Street without citizens’ best interests at mind. You can read about how private companies and crooked politicians have turned our Police forces on their ear in every attempt to squeeze money out of the general public at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-privatized-police-state.html

Rev. Al rarely finds anything but race to feature. Obama isn't helping the 99% of all races close the gap with the 1% who Obama's government continues to subsidize.

An inconvenient truth still is.

A bigot is one who views every word, every situation, through a particular prism.

Those who view every second through the racial prism are racists. .

If I made a movie, that included minority men doing menial, manual labor building a railroad, I would be accused of "racial stereotyping". If I replaced those minorities with "white guys", I would be accused of denying the minorities recognition for their significant contributions to building it. The same thing just happened over Canada's new currency. Depicting an Asian women scientist was deemed "racial stereotyping"---but changing the scientist to a more European female is "non-inclusive" and denying the significant contributions of Asians.

President Obama just does not have the qualifications for the job. He was an Illinois politician and he did not do a thing for the most corrupt and broke state in the USA. has nothing to do with his race.
