The Moral Awakening of Mainstream Christianity

Posted: 05/11/11 12:06 AM ET

"And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8)

Today we bear witness to a historic moment in my church, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and for our nation.

Since late 2010, ministers and elders across the country have been gathering in 173 different regional presbyteries to vote on whether or not to allow openly gay and lesbian people to become ordained ministers. With over half of the presbyteries now voting "yes," our church has taken a bold step towards inclusion that brings the third largest Mainline Christian denomination more in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ; that His love embraces all.

What makes this moment even more significant is that unlike the Episcopal Church, the United Church of Christ and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America which all adopted similar policies through top-level governing bodies alone, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) requires one additional step: ratification by a majority of the individual presbyteries. We have seen ministers and elders in presbyteries like Central Nebraska, Eastern Oklahoma, Middle Tennessee and North Alabama cast the majority of their votes for inclusion. Everyday clergy and lay leaders in areas that have traditionally skewed older, and more conservative -- many of whom voted "no" in previous years when this question was brought to them -- have voted "yes" this time.

I see this vote as one indication of a moral awakening in America. I say moral awakening because many people of faith across the country and world are opening their eyes to the many wonderful gifts and the faithful service that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender believers bring to our many religions.

As a minister who, ever since I was put on trial by my church for marrying a same-gender couple, has felt called by God to open up a heartfelt dialogue with those conflicted about or opposed to inclusion, I have seen this moral awakening first hand. I have witnessed people's minds changed by God in different ways. Just look at the witness that Rev. Arlo Duba and Rev. Randall Tremba provide to see the type of transformation that is occurring across the country.

So why is this so important for progressives of faith and for the country at large?

With 76% of Americans identifying themselves as Christian, it's critically important that progressives of faith give witness and show how Scripture supports the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people into our churches, communities, and civil institutions. This historic moment for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) didn't come in a vacuum. It came after thousands of individual, honest conversations and a deep study of the written Word of God.

The moral awakening of mainstream Christianity won't continue without thousands more conversations like those. As a start toward those thousands more such conversations, I want to say with humility and respect to those who did not vote the way I did: I may not agree with your point of view or interpretation of Scripture, but you are my neighbors and I love you. Scripture tells us that we are "all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). With God's blessed guidance, we can go forward and do justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with our God, stronger together than we could ever imagine.

Rev. Dr. Janet Edwards is a Presbyterian minister in Pittsburgh, PA, and currently serves as Co-Moderator of More Light Presbyterians, a national organization working toward full inclusion of LGBT people within the Presbyterian Church (USA). In 2008 Rev. Edwards was tried and unanimously acquitted by a church court for presiding at the wedding of two women. You can read more on her blog, TimetoEmbrace.com.

In response to many here posting: there is no excuse for ignorance! YOu dont make someone gay, gay people are born gay. Lesbians do not raise lesbian children! this is all complete nonsence and if that is what our church teaches you , its best you seek wisdom elsewhere!

41“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45“He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

10.... the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them. 11Now Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns and he declared, “This is what the Lord says: ‘With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.’”
12All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. “Attack Ramoth Gilead and be victorious,” they said, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”
13The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, “Look, as one man the other prophets are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably.”
14But Micaiah said, “As surely as the Lord lives, I can tell him only what the Lord tells me.”
15When he arrived, the king asked him, “Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?”
“Attack and be victorious,” he answered, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”
16The king said to him, “How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?”
17Then Micaiah answered, “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the Lord said, ‘These people have no master. ....’”

The hatred and bigotry I see here is not Christian but human. I was snubbed by a few "main stream" churches, because of my sexuality, apparently "they" had a problem where I did not. One of the churches was a large Presbyterian church, fortunately for me, I found the Quakers, a faith where I can be me, and one that welcomes ALL, not just those that want to think and act like many others. In no way am I passing judgment, for I am very happy in my Meeting, I can be me without a fear of retribution or ostracism.
Reverend Edwards has stood up and said what is in her heart, and for this I give her thanks. It is very easy to "cherry pick" the scriptures we want to quote, but what scripture comes before or after the one chosen for "our purpose? For me, scriptures are to be read and taken to heart, the scriptures are not a Chinese menu, we cannot pick and choose as we see fir, but I guess we can, for I have read many examples of this.
I will continue to attempt to love ALL, smile at ALL and show compassion and understanding to ALL! The God of my understanding has asked me to love ALL, not just those that I choose to love.

Proverbs 27 states "wounds from a friend can be trusted but an enemy multiplies kisses" It is clear the PCA has joined the ranks of other mainline churches "multiplying kisses" - having a big, ole slobber fest with the LGBT community- advancing spurious doctrine to shore up their declining attendance as well as their ever increasing degree of irrelevance in today's contemporary church -The fact that they do this in the name of "love and tolerance" makes their duplicity all the more insidious. Real Christianity is affirming that we are all fallen, broken individuals with a propensity to sin in different ways...some it is over-indulgence in foods- others it is chemical dependency- still others have to deal with difficult sexual temptations- while others are prideful, arrogant jerks. The Bible (our friend), Jesus (our friend), and we must be friends and speak Truth...that we must come and admit our shortcomings to God and, in turn, open the floodgates of God's transforming mercy, love, and grace....but it will hurt (wounds from a friend)...nobody has the stomach for such purgation- so we say... As the serpent once did..." did God really say?"

1Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

There's a Progressive website that is trying to promote red-letter Christianity based on stuff Jesus actually said.

Also, You Tube has a selection of videos referencing the "Religious Left."

Homosexuality is clearly condemned by the Bible. It goes against the created order of God. He created Adam and then made a woman. This is what God has ordained and it is what is right. Unlike other sins, homosexuality has a severe judgment administered by God Himself. This judgment is simple: They are given over to their passions. That means that their hearts are allowed to be hardened by their sins (Romans 1:18ff). As a result, they can no longer see the error of what they are doing. Without an awareness of their sinfulness, there will be no repentance and trusting in Jesus. Without Jesus, they will have no forgiveness. Without forgiveness, there is no salvation

Ok your right that the ACT is condemned but if you think adultery isnt on the same level then you may want to have a re read.

I think that adultry, fornication, lying, all of the things that god says not to do, are sins.

Lev. 18:22, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."1
Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them"
1 Cor. 6:9-10, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God."
Rom. 1:26-28, "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper."

They also called for death for wearing mixed fiber-clothing. Jesus said he came to explain the underpinnings of the law and didn't reference homosexuality, so I have to conclude, that since Jesus, who mentioned a spectrum of issues, never mentioned this, that the condemnation of homosexuality was an embellishment because "your hearts are hard."

Not if the Presbyterians have their way.

Hard to believe people who call themselves "Christians" refuse to believe God's revelation of the holy scriptures. So sad. No wonder there has been such large numbers leaving the denominations.
People want truth and answers, not some boring religion. This is one cause of the rise of the mega churches.

In biblical times there was no word for "homosexual." There were words relating to homosexual temple prostitutes, male pedophiles, pimps, etc., but these words are often translated simply as homosexual. Even if the original texts are inerrant, the translations certainly aren't. We don't even know for sure what the words arsenokoitai and malakoi meant, but they probably referred to masturbation or male pedophiles, yet they're translated in Romans as simply meaning homosexuals.

If homosexuals should not be allowed to marry, then heterosexuals should not be allowed to divorce except for sexual immorality, disobedient children should be stoned to death, shellfish and pork should be banned, and we should only be allowed "Biblical Marriage," i.e. between a man, his wives, his wives' maidservants, his concubines, and his brother's childless widow.... Anything else but following the 613 Mosaic laws and the things Paul said that we aren't sure how to translate would be "Moral Relativism"

And Jesus's use of "Born Eunuchs" or "Eunuchs by birth" is interesting in that these are the Roman legal terms for homosexuals during the time he lived. Ironically, Jesus also here contradicts one of Moses's 613 laws, this one in particular being Deuteronomy 24:1-4. Either Moses or Jesus must be wrong. So much for inerrancy.

How can a person without sex organs be a homosexual. It would be physically impossible. as you said, jesus also denied divorce, except for adultry. As for shell fish and pork, those commandments were lifted .

I am very glad to hear and see this take place within what is considered to be the third largest portion of the Body of Christ. However, we have some things to point out. Let all who identify as being Homosexual or Bisexual realize that the same responsibility of personal integrity privately and publically are Required to walk this path as it has been for so many heterosexuals who have traversed this course. You will have to give account before God's throne one day concerning the blood of the lives of other souls not just your own. "God is not mocked." The bisexuals, well, you must realize that " a double mined man is unstable in all his ways.". I do not mean to condemn you only give a warning that "God is NOT the Author of confusion." Monogomy has its blessing and benefits. "Only One." is the phrase which comes to miind from the movie "HARRY POTTER". Finally, the House of Bishops of the Episcopal church did make a Majority decision in favor of inclusion of GLBT persons in Anaheim, CA at our last convention. It is , unfortunately, still being debated and rejected by some just as some congregations within Christianity still struggle with racial prejudice and bigotry to this day. "Noetheless, Christ is preached."

You misconstrue what Bisexual means. (I'm Bisexual, by the way.)

Bisexual does NOT mean one has a male sexual partner and a female one.

It means one is romantically and sexual attracted to both sexes and can all in love with either sex. Bisexuals can be as monogamous as others. When we're monogamous withe opposite sex we appear straight and when we're monogamous with the same sex we appear Lesbian or Gay.

But when we end up single we just have twice as many folk to date to find someone we might love.

Great post. The news regarding ordination requirements within the Presbyterian church was a very welcome one to me. People are finally returning to the true message of Scripture: love God and love each other, and I'm glad to be a part of this growing movement.

Let truth prevail over "stuff"

There is a large chasm between loving the person and condonning his sin. Christ never told anyone Your sins are forgiven go and continue sinning. God did not set this world up on the idea of same sex matings. I can still love any of my neighbors but I don't have to sccept sinfullness in them or in myself. Even Paul questioned why he did those things that he hated. I have always understood that to mean that no one is perfect which is why we needed Christs act of salvation.

This article should be titled "What religion is willing to do to maintain relevance". If we looked underneath the ever shifting goal posts of what is acceptable to religion, we would see that changes like this only occur when religion begins to get left behind. It is clear what the Bible says about homosexuals and this is something that we should never allow Christians to forget. If Christians really want to take part in the moral landscape of the modern world, maybe they should consider ignoring the rest of the Bible too. What harm can come from another few ignored verses? I would wager that none will come, just as no harm has come from every Christian ignoring the Bible's orders to kill people that work on the Sabbath and kill your kids if they dishonor you.

That's what people say when they no longer care if what they believe is true. Maintaining your cling to God only shows that you are willing to go down with a sinking ship. You may intend for it to appear like you are steadfast in your unbreakable faith, but I assure you that it really just looks like someone that would rather ignore reality as long as they got to maintain the illusion of knowledge and comfort.

"Debachuary is wrong." You need to think a lot hard, and a lot longer. Reading a little bit would be good for you, too. If anyone is "debauched" in today's world, it is heterosexuals.

You have no right whatsoever to cast your judgment over the world from a place of ignorance.

By the way, I'm assuming that since my partner and I are little old ladies who don't even think about sex anymore, we'll have your full approval to get married.
