Gingrich Plays Old South Race Card of a Bygone Era

Posted: 01/24/2012 12:12 pm

The toxic message that drove Newt Gingrich to victory in South Carolina will drive our nation apart rather than bring it together. And it will spell defeat for him -- and for Republicans if they choose to go that way.

Gingrich's campaign limped into South Carolina on life support. His revival came from his cunning peddling of a poisonous potion of race-bait politics to a virtually all-white electorate.

Voters swung to Gingrich because, as Harold Wade, 85, was quoted in the Washington Post as saying, "We need someone who's mean" to take on Obama. Newt filled that description by employing a hoary campaign tactic: blistering the "elite media" while posturing on race.

Gingrich's rise was launched when Fox News pundit Juan Williams, an African-American, questioned him about calling Obama the "food stamp president." Gingrich grabbed the opportunity to scorn Williams and slur Obama, while painting Republicans as the party of work. Standing ovation. In the second debate, Gingrich dismissed his second wife's charge that he had asked her for an open marriage by snarling at CNN's John King, saying it was "despicable" merely to raise the issue.

In the new South Carolina, blacks and whites play ball together, shop together and serve in the military together. But none of that was visible in the virtually all-white, conservative Republican primary. So Gingrich could use food stamps the way that Reagan burlesqued welfare. But the measure of any civilization is how we treat the needy in times of trouble. Some 45 million Americans receive food stamps. The program benefits farmers, truckers and grocers, as well as the malnourished. It is morally sound and merits praise.

But Gingrich wanted to give Republican primary voters a full dose of Old South politics. He paraded it all out in his acceptance speech on the night of his victory.

The major issue of the election, he said, was a choice between "American exceptionalism" and the "radicalism of Saul Alinsky." (Few knew who Saul Alinsky was, but with that name, they knew he wasn't one of them.) Gingrich painted himself as standing with Americans revolting against "elites who have been trying for a half century to force us to quit being American and to become some kind of other system."

This paranoid nonsense had special meaning to the voters of the Old South. A half century ago was the civil rights movement, and Dr. King's victory over segregation -- and Southerners were embittered at the media for reporting on the demonstrations.

Gingrich then decried a mythic "anti-religious bigotry of our elites." Denouncing an obscure judge for a ruling on prayer at graduation ceremonies, Gingrich stood tall against "speech dictatorship by anti-religious bigots."

Gingrich endorsed Texas Gov. Perry's focus on the 10th Amendment, promising to return power to the states and local governments. States' rights is the doctrine of the Confederacy, of the Fort Sumter party, not the Boston Tea Party. This doctrine was invoked in defense of slavery, of secession and of segregation.

Gingrich concluded by promising to defend historic America from being transformed into a "secular European-style bureaucratic socialistic system," and to "rally Americans to reassert their belief in America."

This mix of resentment and victimization sold well in South Carolina. But the old poisons drive us apart, not together, and will alienate far more voters than it attracts in most of America. If the Gingrich campaign continues, Republicans are likely to learn the hard way that a party of white sanctuary is a minority party in an America of proud diversity.

Gingrich is acting like a be-wigged member of the affluent class of the 1700s, in which a caste sytem was put into place in order to create a society of aristocracy and servant classes.

Most whites cheering for Newt Gingrich thinks that he is talking about ALL of us, when Newt is really talking about more freedoms and affluency for rich whites, while creating a servant caste system for the rest of us.

Sure, he sugar coats his speeches with anti-black rhetoric, but this is only an attempt to cover up what he really intends to do with the rest of us who are not in his class: to create aristocracy and servant classes, where privilege or subjugation is inherited by birthright or circumstance.

In other words, poor and working class whites will be subjugated----right along with blacks-----into a perpetual servant caste.

The rich have never been for you, but talking up the dream of a black subserviant class will help most whites to vote for priviledged people like Newt, and utimately against themselves.

In other words, if you aren't part of the priviledged 1 percent of this nation like Newt and his ultra rich buddies;

Gutting the military is a mistake. The terrorists ain't gonna just lay down and cry. Those people who were celebrating when the USA was hit 9\11 has that same mentality. China is still enlarging herself and branching out with more sofhisticated hardware. Outer space, missile technology, stealth planes, drones, computers expertise and tons of technology. They are subject to flex their muscles at any time as they join forces with Iran, North Korea, South America. This new Axis power would not hesitate to strike America first given the right circumstances. A punk president we don't need to challenge these pagans.

Too many believe President Obama can do no wrong and give him a pass. Of course it's not because he's black, it's his policies that many are against. He just cannot get automatic exoneration. The European nations are largely failures subject to bankruptcy with this entitlement mentality. Shifting all that money around it a short span of time and zero job growth is cause for concern especially in leiu of the Keystone oil pipeline. President Obama allow other oil companies drilling privileges and permits, doesn't he? I'm suspect of ObamaCare knowing full well it ain't free. Grandpaw will have to settle for generic brand George Washington wooden teeth. Grandma for a water pill for breast cancer. If free there sure will be cut-rate care to the bone or early euthanasia at 50 years old if you have something terminal.

Jesse Jackson and the old "race" card. Get a grip. You are a hypocrite and you have no business even mentioning Martin Luther King Jr's name. He was the opposite of you. He wanted equal rights for everyone no matter what color there skin was. You want free money given to you because you are black, blah blah blah. You're an insult to every African American. This is how Jesse Jackson and his Rainbow Coalition works:
Basically, what they do is threaten people or companies with boycotts or news media coverage, then, the company often offers to pay them off, or donate to their cause.

For example, Jesse Jackson approached Toyota with the idea that they need more minority inclusion. Toyota was afraid if they didn't play along they would be labeled as racist, so they met with Jackson and worked out a deal, offering contracts to minorities and donating huge sums of money to Rainbow Coalition.

A bigger story might be the one where Jackson threaten a boycott on Anheuser Busch, who then offered his son an Anheuser Busch distributorship, which they happily accepted. Jesse, take your lithium on a daily basis and go away.

Gingrich is still stuck on the "vote for me because I'm White" mentality.

Newt is not the only one stuck in the past. Apparently the good Reverend believes it is still the 1960s.

Jesse Jackson cannot seem to get a grip on the fact that his days of being a self proclaimed "black leader" are over. We live in a country of professionals and key players who happen to be black and they have separated themselves from the collective black voice Jackson claims to speak for. More and more young black men and women have both sought and found the American dream and no longer want to be part of Jesse Jackson's race baiting and lifelong cry of "it's not your fault it's the white man's fault" They found that he was the only one profiting from his message and that his non stop references to Martin Luther King were nothing more than a contradiction to Dr. King's purpose and his last hope of retaining credibility. So what if the hall was full of white republicans. Are they not allowed to support the party they choose? The Democrats are the true racists and trying to keep blacks down by blame in order to secure votes just isn't working like it used to. IMO the true racism exists in those who refer to all black Americans as one person with one voice and one thought instead of the indivuals well capable of thinking for themselves they truly are

Supermarkets receive HUGE profit$ from food stamps, this allows them to offer more sales to ALL shoppers.

So, in the long run its a win/win for e very shopper whether or not they receive food stamps benefits.

Not to mention how disgusting a way this is to dodge a serious issue. The billionaire CEO's that run our nation's largest corporations have done everything to inflate their own salaries, to the point wages for workers in the non-skilled service and manufacturing sectors aren't even close to keeping up with the cost of living, and more and more jobs are being sent overseas so Chinese people can work 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, for less than a dollar an hour, with no benefits or opportunity for advancement. Why pay an American a living wage to do the work, when you can pay someone in a third world country $.73 cents an hour, so you can take a $50 million salary plus bonuses, instead of settling for $5 million? Newt never talks about that. He just wants to blame the people who can't find jobs with a living wage, and lump them in with the percentage of the unemployed who are just scamming the system and aren't really trying to find work.

Yep, Newt is preaching to the white majority still enraged at the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Senator DeMint and his followers having seen the Hispanic Population rise by 149% in SC thru 2010 are running scared. He knows the writing is on the wall for his political demise.
12:49 PM on 01/26/2012
Yeah illegals overrun a state and its a good things eh? Criminal acts are up 82% rapes are up 48% and this is what democrats call a "good thing".
08:45 PM on 01/26/2012
The 149% increase was in Hispanic Citizens able to vote. The only overrun...of probable criminal acts is Republican attempt to nullify the 14th Amendment. DeMint is the leading advocate of repealing the 14th Amendment because he knows his days are limited.

This is an excellent analysis. Yes, Gingrich played to the worst prejudices of the South, deliberately ginning up the politics of division to gain support for himself. It's despicable. He's running on of negativism and divisiveness to curry favor with the small-minded and resentful. He's just using them to get ahead, not even bothering to douse the campfire when he moves on, leaving the embers still smouldering in the forest.
