When we released "The Cove" in Japan last Summer, I knew it wouldn't be easy. Of course, I also had no way of knowing just how vigorously our opponents would fight the truth. A small, but very vocal group engaged in a massive campaign of misinformation and intimidation against us. They tried to paint us as anti-Japanese, when nothing could be further from the truth. They showed up at the homes of our supporters. Their places of business. Even their elderly parents' homes. With megaphones blaring, they spewed messages of hate and divisiveness. They almost succeed in getting the film pulled from theaters.

When that failed, they did everything in their power to discredit the film.

One of the arguments they made, which was picked up by some Japanese media, is that fisherman had changed the technique that they use to kill the dolphins. That what they do now happens "instantly" and is more humane.

We knew it was a lie, but we couldn't prove it. Until now.

Volunteers have been on the ground since Sept. 1 monitoring the fisherman, documenting as much as possible. While the footage has been devastating, what was missing was the actual kill, which happens behind a cold blue tarp. But our supporters are patient, and the other day Save Japan Dolphins volunteer Leah Lemieux was there when the tarp fell.

What she caught on tape was devastating. The fisherman does appear to stab the dolphin behind its blowhole. But the dolphin's death is far from quick, and couldn't under any circumstances be considered humane. You'll see how many of the dolphins desperately throw themselves on the rocky coastline in effort to escape, or perhaps hasten their own inevitable death.

According to a spokesperson with the Japanese Fisheries Agency, this method "kills the dolphins instantly." In fact, the video footage shows dolphins thrashing in agony for long minutes, amid their own blood and the screams of other dolphins being killed.

Judge for yourself. See the video here, but be warned it's worse than what was shown in "The Cove".

We're sending this footage to every Japanese media outlet we met with last Summer. If you have contacts in Japan please share this.

It's essential that the Japanese people get a complete and accurate picture of what's happening. To that end, we will need to be tireless in our efforts to get the truth out.

Because it is working... the other night Rock superstar Sting came to Japan and voiced his support for a debate on the issue.

But more importantly, Japanese people are starting to stand up. Last week six Japanese women traveled to Taiji to learn for themselves what is happening there. They met with media and voiced their opposition to the dolphin killing. This wouldn't have happened a year ago. In fact, it wouldn't have happened a month ago. Many in Japan have been intimidated by the aggressive tactics that our opponents have been using. After all, would you want someone at your front door blaring insults through a megaphone, with no regard for your family, children or neighbors?

It's made it almost impossible to convince our Japanese friends to come forward. So what these women did was brave and commands respect. Leah reported after meeting them: "what we had here were the modest seeds of gentle change, born of quiet courage and simple compassion. This may be the birth of true Japanese grassroots for the dolphins, without any bells and whistles. These determined women came from as far away as Osaka and even Tokyo to show with their presence, their determination to see the dolphin hunt end."

I can't say enough about these women, and all the volunteers who have traveled from all over the world to monitor activities in the cove. Their dedication moves me beyond words.

Onward!

I was born and raised here so I find the dolphin hunt horrific and I find it ridiculous when I hear people arguing that livestock being slaughtered in law-abiding facilities are the same thing. On the other hand, I'm also familiar with the way that the Japanese are viewing the outcry against whaling and this dolphin hunt.

Westernization started after the war there, so it could be argued that they're behind the times when it comes to animal rights. But also consider the fact that General MacArthur essentially rebuilt the whaling industry in Japan and encouraged its growth (both to feed starving people and to provide more oil for the US & Europe). This took place around the 50's and 60's when whaling was becoming obsolete in the US. Alot of Japanese people (mostly older generations) view our demand for the end to whaling/the dolphin hunt as another demand being made by "Westerners". This also partially explains the stubbornness displayed by the Japanese gov't (coincidentally made up mostly of older generations).

I also see lots of Japanese people protesting that there's a double standard here. They hear about the substantial amount of animal abuse and poor conditions in slaughterhouses here, the kangaroo slaughter in Australia, the practice of hunting for game in the US, etc. and wonder why they're being singled out. The concept of speaking out against the practices of a foreign country and imposing on their way of life seems really strange to them.

I couldn't even watch the entire video. This coming from someone who can captive bolt a cow to kill it. At least captive bolt is relatively quick, these dolphins are terrified and fighting for their lives.

How anyone can look at this video and not be appalled in beyond me!! The terror of those poor dophins! This is nothing but the slaughter of intelligent, defenseless creatures who are so desparately trying to escape their tormentors and killers. I will gladly join any organization that is trying to put an end to this horrific action! Hopefully, the spreading of this video, will also hurt their tourist trade. I wouldn't spend 1cent in a country that sanctions this practice!!!

How depressing. Killing whales and dolphins is so needless and cruel.

I have been a vegetarian all my life ( don't impose it on others though ) and I oppose killing of any kind. But with all due respect, I see a hypocrisy in the dolphin saving business. First of all, why is there a western outrage about killing dolphins ? I believe the biggest reason is that westerners find dolphins cute. So why should a country stop doing what they have done probably for centuries to make hollywood happy ? I find lambs and calves very cute ( seriously ), so I argue that you should stop their killing at home in USA first, before you go telling other countries what to eat and what not to eat. Think about it before you enjoy your next hamburger, veal chop or a lamb kabab. Animals are slaughtered in USA by the millions everyday and millions of tons of meat is thrown in the garbage cans in this country. Now how humane is that and why is there no oscar winning documentary about that. The reason is, we want to preach the whole world the things that we don't want to practice ourselves. We have no right to tell a country to change its culture based on our feelings, especially while we don't follow our own advice in our own homes. Or perhaps we don't really care about dolphins ( or any animals ) at all. We just have found a way to use people's emotions to make money via popular films.

Yeah, I would agree with you if sheep and cows were in danger of becoming extinct. They are definitely not, because they are farmed.

Dolphins are not farmed. And they are endangered. We are facing a future where whales, dolphins, tuna, and many other species that live in our Oceans will be gone within 30 years. 30 years!!!

So please, fight the good fight for the animals that will not be around in our lifetimes because pure human greed and selfishness.

I am an animal lover, or shall I say a lover of any creature great or small, won't even kill a spider & I do not eat meat/fish either. I agree with some of what you have shared, but at least here in the US it IS done humanely & the beef, pork, lamb, etc. does not have high contents of poison that is killing people! What the Japanese are doing is just disgusting, not to mention they are poisoning their own people. Dolphins eat mostly Tuna which has the highest content of mercury (look it up) out of all the fish in the ocean, with the exception of the Dolphins that eat them, therefore leaving the people of Japan, and a lot of them, with mercury poisoning & the Japanese people are not even aware of it, not to mention they are passing this Dolphin meat off at markets as "other types of fish" so the Japanese people do not even know they are even eating it!
At least if they are to continue this as a part of their culture, their gov't. needs to be honest with the people....but that will NEVER happen all because of greed!

Watch a documentary called 'Earthlings' and you'll see that quite much of the beef, pork etc killing in US is very inhumane. :/

it is unimaginable what this horrendous slaughter must look like in person.

it is the awarness of the Japanese people that will finally put an end to this atrocity.

perhaps Sting can persuade other famous Rock bands to boycott Japan and let the younger generation know why...the younger generation is where the change will come from.

Barry & Watson are the REAL HEROES of this planet.

Protecting a cash flow stream is done with lies and intimidation in all countries. The more cash flows through the stream the more nefarious and vigorous the lies and intimidations.

I saw "The Cove" about a month ago and was absolutely shocked at what I saw. If anyone has not seen this excellent work they must take the time and effort to do so.

It is work like this that makes the world a better place by exposing behaviour that can not stand the light of day.
