Who would have thought that the 21st century challenge to capitalism would come in the form of a rip-roaring funny and emotionally moving film?
Michael has done it.
Last night I attended the Los Angeles premiere of Michael Moore's latest film, Capitalism: A Love Story. What an incredible piece of work. Michael has taken on the very fundamental assumptions of capitalism and he has made it clear that we can and should do better. Not just with a particular individual or corporation -- no, he has gone after the way the system works.

It is funny. And moving. Michael's ability to balance tone is an achievement he gets far too little credit for. I can think of few others who can move from an astute analysis of how the system works and for whom right into a rip-your-heart-out profile of one of the daily tragedies of unfettered capitalism to a comedic moment that leaves the entire audience roaring.
And most critically, as Michael makes clear, it is not enough to just watch the movie, now we all have to do something!
Start by seeing the movie, then get out and kick some ass.

The only hitch I can anticipate is that Michael views economic systems statically and not as dynamics in process; I think.
It is one thing to have a mcJob and another to use a McJob. If a McJob is all you have then you don't really want to create; you simply want to take. If a McJob is helping you afford a college education then its like a magic cookie in a cookie jar. It's there for you to take and when your done with it you leave there for someone else to use the job and like magic the cookie jar remains still with the cookie you took and used having been replaced anew.
Capitalism thus viewed has a goal : to be a ladder of ever increasing merit, opportunity and increasing quality of life. it is not without flaw as it is yet new.
