Obama, Forget Martha's Vineyard, Vacation in Elkhart

By Robert J. Guttman and Emily Benavides

In these days of high unemployment and financial stress, it is not the time to go to the exclusive island of Martha's Vineyard. The influx of spending brought by the presidential entourage would have a greater effect in the Midwestern, economically hurting city of Elkhart, Indiana. You've been there enough times already to speak, why not go and spend more time getting to know the city with 18.8% unemployment? Instead of spending $25,000 to rent a private estate on the elite isle of Martha's Vineyard, stay at the Holiday Inn Express at Elkhart. They have a pool onsite, just as the lofty estate on Martha's Vineyard, but in Elkhart you'd be stimulating the economy in a way your monumental stimulus bill has yet to achieve.

There are multiple ways to enjoy your time in Elkhart, you could take the White House Staff to one of the interesting museums in town, to brush up on their art history at The Midwest Museum of American Art, which has over 2500 works in its collection and offers 8-10 temporary showings per year. For members of the Presidential entourage that enjoy transportation history, there's The National New York Central Railroad Museum which tells the history of the New York Central, Penn Central, Amtrak and Conrail railroads.

Elkhart County is the RV Capital of the World and thus the RV/MH Hall of Fame & Museum is located in the city, which could also be an interesting place to visit and pick up some Midwestern flair. If it gets too hot, you could take everyone to NIBCO Parkway, a skating rink that turns into a free water spray park in the summer. Everyone would have fun and you'd save some of those precious taxpayer dollars.

You're a Midwesterner, Obama. Take the opportunity to go back to your roots. Elkhart is near Chicago, you could even take the Secret Service and White House Staff on a tour of your favorite Windy City spots.

You seem to own most of Detroit now, why not go check on your investment? Visit the one company that you didn't have to rescue and go to the Dearborn Ford Museum to learn about the development of America's only truly private car company. While your there you can help any White House staffers trade their clunkers in, infusing the area with even more financial strength. With an unemployment rate that rose to 22.8%, Detroit could definitely use some of that Obama popularity to boost its economy.

On your way back to D.C. you could stop in Toledo, Ohio, another economically depressed automotive subsidiary town. The Toledo Museum of Art has consistently been rated one of the top ten in the nation. While in the Glass City you could stop by Tony Packo's for one of their famous Hungarian hot dogs. Not far from the city limits there are Maumee Bay State Park and Put-In-Bay island for a bit of fun in the sun. A little further on the Ohio turnpike and you could spend a day with the girls at Cedar Point, America's Roller Coast.

The American people are looking to you, Mr. President. They'll follow your lead. Why not lead them to the places that need your help the most, instead of to an already financially stable and prosperous New England island. America's heartland is calling Mr. President, won't you answer their call?

Mr. Guttman obviously did not do his homework or he would have found out that glitz and glamour aside Martha's Vineyard has over 15,000 hard working year round residents who are also greatly affected by the current economic crisis.

I have a lovely, quiet place, right on the St. Joe River, just 20 miles upstream from Elkhart. The Obama's are welcome here. They could do day trips to the area to see things for themselves and then spend an evening relaxing on the river.

It's called a vacation for a reason. The man needs to get away. Leave him alone already.

Dear President Obama:

Fortunately it is not necessary for me to say what I'm about to say, except to repond to this advice.

Don't take it.

Elkhart, Indiana is not near any current ocean.

You are from an ocean environment.

If you are going on vacation, you need to be by the ocean to recharge.

We, the people of the United States, need you to recharge. We do not need a President who needs a rest to be campaigning, regardless of what needs to be done.

And enjoy.

A very tough call. He and his family have been through a very tough year and give up a lot of their lives for what they are doing. I know about all the wonderful opportunities and privileges but I would never do it. It's too much sacrifice. For the family, there is the invasion of privacy, loss of personal space, break up of lifelong friendships, loss of being able to just go out and be yourself, the new "any lie can be told, stop at nothing" obstructive approach to politics, the endless criticism including horrible things said about his daughters recently.
With all that, isn't a few days away from it all in Marthas Vineyard before the next year begins in order, for sanity's sake?
Bush took an unbelievable amount of time off. And all the while, his policies were creating the bad place Elkhart and lots of other cities and towns are in today. He did manage to get a lot of brush cleared.

Martha's Vineyard -- while the rest of America is reeling from record job losses and home foreclosures -- someone is tone deaf in the Obama White House

too many of the Clintonistas stirring the pot it seems like Clinton administration redux with the weiredly timed trip to Africa the trip to NY for a night out on the town, the first summer holiday to the America is evaporating while the Persident goes around making cornball jokes that don't really go over well

Obama should to stop trying to be comediene in chief and cut the vacation to the Vineyard and spend the time in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, PA, Missiouri, Iowa and Colorado -- Obama needs to remember who brung him to the big dance

Aside from Security concerns... how exactly would Elkhart be a vacation? Where is the downtime? I suppose you'd want him to throw in a few town halls down there too.

Obama already visited Elkhart on February 9, 2009.

So he doesnt deserve a vacation of his choice like everyone else? Why the hell wld anyone want to vacation in Elkhart? Martha's Vineyard is a lovely place and it just the kind of place where he can go and chill out, in fact I am going there myself in a couple of weeks. Besides they supported McCain at 55 % during the elections, if he is going to a downtrodden place he shld go to Detroit or Cleveland where the people voted for him. Those people have supported the policies and the party that has made them an economic basket case, they are getting what they voted for. So now Obama shld vacation with them because they are reaping what they sowed by voting for republicans? Tell the yella dawg senator Bayh to go vacation with them.

First Obama had the gall to not listen to us and get the family dog from an animal shelter. Then he totally disregarded our wishes that he send his daughters to a D.C. public school. When he ate a hamburger he did not heed our advice regarding condiments, he insisted on the Dijon mustard. Dijon mustard?!? I suspect he'll disappoint us yet again by not vacationing in Elkhart.

You know what, if Obama just does his job I say let him vacation where ever he wants.

Martha's Vineyard is a great place for a family vacation which appears to be the Obamas' goal. It's a relaxing and laid back environment. Beautiful beaches, extensive hiking trails and bike paths -- the very opposite of their lifestyle in DC. There's a built in advantage to the Vineyard beyond it's natural beauty - there won't be a fuss as people here are very much accustomed to high profile neighbors and visitors.

The Vineyard is not the exclusive luxury resort that is often portrayed in the press. It's so much more. Many "regular" families, my own included, vacation on MV. There is a wide range of choices for lodging and dining. A vacation here is much more affordable then might be thought at first glance.

I assume this was written tongue in cheek and was not meant to be taken literally.

Excellent point.

Fact is Obama has been seduced already. When he has secret meetings with big business and makes deals with them about other people' health care, and excluded any of the "People' from the discussions, there is not hope of his representing the best interests of The People.

He sold us out and he sold us out 300M people for 80M bucks.
