Is Sarah Palin Out-Donalding The Donald?

Posted: 05/28/11 04:30 PM ET

It's clear to everyone now that Donald Trump had no intention, and no ability, to run for President. He was and remains the quintessential publicity hound and self promoter. But the launch of Sarah Palin's "One Nation" bus tour might make the Donald look a piker when it comes to leveraging 2012 for her own commercial purposes.

On the July 4th holiday in 2009, Sarah Palin resigned as governor of Alaska with 18 months left in her term. At the time, her spokesperson Meg Stapleton said: "She is not focused on 2012. She is focused on making a difference on the topics she finds so dear: energy independence [and] national security." I will let others decide whether or not she has focused on those policy matters, but I do agree that she has not been focusing on a run for President in 2012. To the contrary, she has instead been focusing on the booming industry that is Sarah Palin.

Four months after leaving the governorship, Palin released Going Rogue, a wildly successful book with a wildly successful book tour that included a bus tour to 11 states (sound familiar?) and media saturation on television, radio, and online. Palin received an advance of $7 million for her first book -- to say nothing of the royalties she received based on sales. In a clever political twist, she asked donors to her Political Action Committee to give $100 in exchange for a copy of her book. The Palin family's participation on reality television shows has raked in another $3 million. She currently earns around $100,000 for a single speech. Then there's the house in Arizona she recently purchased for $1.7 million.

In fact, ABC News estimated in April 2010 that Palin had earned at least 100 times her governor's salary since her resignation -- and that was more than a year ago. How rogue is that?

If you look at the route of Palin's upcoming bus tour, one thing stands out: it takes her right through the biggest media and consumer markets in the country. She can sell her wares here, but let's be clear: these are not strategic political states for Republican candidates for President.

In a canny move by her campaign, the only specific statement about tour destinations is that the tour "will end somewhere in New Hampshire." We've all heard political pundits breathlessly speculating that Palin is choosing to end the tour in New Hampshire because of its importance as a primary state, but the math doesn't add up. Why not Iowa? Why not South Carolina? What about swing states like Ohio, Arizona, New Mexico or Florida? It's simple: the New Hampshire destination draws the cameras and fuels the free media coverage of a potential run for President. Would the media be following the story if the bus tour started in Nebraska and ended in Wyoming? No.

During the first week of her book tour, we heard Palin herself respond to Oprah about whether she'd run for President in 2012: "I'm concentrating on 2010 ... [2012 is] not on my radar screen right now."

I believed Palin all along when she said she wasn't focused on 2012, when she resigned from her governorship, when she talked to Oprah, and I believe her now: Palin isn't thinking about running for President. She is thinking about Sarah Palin, Inc. The media this weekend will be covering this event like a political campaign, but it isn't. It's a book tour, a radio tour, and a marketing tour.

If I am wrong and she does run, so be it, I was wrong. But if I'm right, (wink, you know I am) she should come clean and admit that she never planned to run for President, but meticulously planned to leverage her VP candidacy for personal profit, starting with her resignation from her job she was elected to do in Alaska. She should apologize to her loyal fans for playing them for fools and return the PAC money she has spent on her self-promotion. Move over The Donald and make room for The Sarah.

Hoopes is exactly right here. This is one big self-promotional blitz right in the face of her (former) party. This is how she has gone rogue: rogue self-interest.

Palin goes to a Pentecostal church, where they do not sing the hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers." Many Christians who do, and who know how to put on the Armor of Truth, know that the invisible Christian spiritual army is the FINEST fighting force this world has ever known. That she disagrees and says that it is not the Christian Army, but the US Army, shows she is not a true Christian.

Good article. I think your assessment is accurate.

Even if Sarah does run, it would be a marketing ploy. She might run knowing full well she can't get elected president but it would keep her in the game for $100,000 speeches and other media deals much longer.

For Sarah, winning the Republican nomination and losing to Obama would be ideal. She would be the first woman to run for president leading a major party which would add to her fame and fortune. Losing to Obama would mean she wouldn't have to deal with the downside of public service which she found so intolerable as Governor of Alaska.

Palin is on a last gasp for attention tour. She can't get big crowds anymore, that has been proven, so she is attaching herself to gatherings that can produce good snapshots of big crowds. The MSM has always been her biggest fans and they are proving it once again. It won't help her poll numbers and will probably only make more people dislike her craven greed. What does she care? She is intent on bleeding the last penny out of her dwindling base of supporters. Palin is very much like Trump in that they are hurting the GOP and that is always a good thing.

It's quite eerie how some people think on the same wave link. Within a few words I could have easily penned the same. In a round about way I'll pat my self on the back by telling you you posted a very good comment. :-))

Hi jimmy.

I had to laugh at your comment because it is so true. Thank you for the compliment and right back at you! :)

The funny thing DianneinCA is that Palin didn't invite the 11 news vans along on her trip. The liberal news media acts like she's nothing, so why follow her when they weren't invited? Maybe they're looking to bolster their ratings by making up stories and attacking her. If anyone here should be ashamed its MSNBC and the left wing news media. They weren't invited to the party so they decided to crash it. If MSNBC doesn't think she's important enough to attack daily then why follow her?

The birth certificate is in a cave being held by some grizzly, the tax return will never surface, because she's on a dupe her supporters bus tour. And by all the hoopla and golly gee stuff she's accomplishing the duping as planned knowing full well she's not running.

Palin is doing what is best for Palin, that is, getting media exposure. She will write another book, do another reality show, several paid speeches, and rake in the dollars. Why would this self-serving, small minded person want to limit herself to the presidential income? She just wants the dollars and the validation of people whose minds work like hers.
11:49 AM on 06/01/2011
Funny but the only media that she invited on her trip was Fox News. The other liberal news organizations weren't invited. Maybe she thought they'd attacked her and her family enough and they didn't deserve the invite? At this point MSNBC is like some kind of emaciated dog. She tried to play nice and feed the MSNBC dog but instead it bit her. Now it follows her around looking for scraps..

All you people want to say shes doing it to make money? Fine. But the truly funny part is you say she wants attention but it's the liberal news media that are following her around, she didn't invite them. It makes you wonder? Why does MSNBC follow her around? Maybe they want to increase their viewership from 5 people to 10?

As you said, she 'meticulously leveraged her VP candidacy for personal profit'. So why is it so inconceivable that the might run simply to leverage her presidential candidacy for personal profit. Planning or running is different than planning on winning. She can hold some big ticket fundraisers, launch some internet money bombs, put up some you-tube videos, etc. And then when the press points out that she isn't doing or saying anything of substance and the poll numbers lag she can tearfully resign and say that she wanted to run a different kind of campaign to save America but the old lamestream media wouldn't let her! Then she can go right back to the money train with a big surplus of unspent donations in SarahPAC and a newly refurbished resume.

She is so patently unsuited for ANY job that it's sad - and ridiculous - that we even have to be talking about this

It's what the MSM considers very important news. They're all running around giddy trying to make people think they're doing in depth reporting.

This paragraph leaped off the page for me:

"If you look at the route of Palin's upcoming bus tour, one thing stands out: it takes her right through the biggest media and consumer markets in the country. She can sell her wares here, but let's be clear: these are not strategic political states for Republican candidates for President"

Hoopes is right. So the question is, is she out for the pure, instant publicity to get the nation loving her again rather than getting more local press in primary states, or is she up to something else?

The answer? Something else. We've seen that she has a new movie coming out in just a few weeks that will be shown in selected theaters all over the nation. That two-hour film, balls-ily entitled "The Undefeated," is said to be one giant re-writing of her time as governor of Alaska to explain away why she quit so people won't think so badly of her any more. Could this be a shameless pre-tour publicity tour to focus everybody's attention on Miss Me-me-me Palin once again and drive her fans into the theaters?

You betcha.

She is trying to stay revelant even after thej GOP contender parade passes her by. I think that's a terrible uphill battle. Once the "will she or won't she" tease is gone, she's old news.

I knew I'd heard the VOX Global name before. You folks consult a lot of our national and international clients for one major reason, you’re firm is politically agnostic. Yet this piece by Mr. Hoopes doesn't follow VOX's stated position. I'm no Palin in the least Mr. Hoopes but she or any private citizen unless laws have been broken which they have not have nothing to apologize for. Neither she nor any American citizen, once again if no laws have been broken, has any obligation to anyone but to themselves. I think the question here is why a VOX Executive is entering the realm of written selection using this two legged political bar stool when most of our, hence your clients are corporations that demand political anonymity in their media relations? We'll be asking these questions Mr. Hoopes.

yawn. How about she apologizes to the people of Alaska for taking an oath and then running out on it?
