George W. Bush as Hurricane Isaac

Posted: 08/27/2012 12:09 pm

There is nothing Republicans would rather the American people forget more than George W. Bush, who doesn't even have a bit-part at the GOP convention opening today in Tampa.

But W's ghost may be there, anyway.

The National Weather Service says tropical storm Isaac is now heading for New Orleans, and Isaac is projected to become a Category 1 hurricane by the time it makes landfall late Monday or early Tuesday.

Isaac is very likely to revive memories of the Bush administration's monumental incompetence in dealing with the needs of Americans caught in Hurricane Katrina.

And if the public remembers the Bush administration's incompetence with Katrina, they may also recall that administration's lies about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq -- which led us into that devastating war.

And the public may recall how George W. Bush took the $5 billion surplus Bill Clinton bequeathed to him and turned it into a $6 trillion budget deficit by slashing taxes, mostly on the rich, and by creating an expensive new Medicare drug benefit that helped insurance companies more than it helped seniors.

The public might even recall how the Bush administration tried not to see what Wall Street was up to when the Street went on a rampage of risky bets, and then, when Wall Street was about to melt down, pushed Congress into approving a no-strings bailout -- both of which cost the nation billions more.

Indeed, we're still living with George W. Bush's legacy -- the last Republican to occupy the White House -- which is a truth that Romney is desperate to put out of our minds. He wants to blame the bad economy, and most of everything else, on Obama.

The GOP was intent on not even bringing up Bush's name at the GOP convention, because the former president might also remind Americans how little the Republicans care about average Americans, like those caught in Hurricane Katrina, and how much they care about top corporate and Wall Street executives, like those being entertained in Tampa.

But Hurricane Isaac seems likely to remind Americans anyway. And the split screen on the TV newscasts -- part GOP convention, part Hurricane Isaac bashing into the Gulf Coast -- will pose a public-relations problem to the GOP of the first order.

ROBERT B. REICH, Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley, was Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration. Time Magazine named him one of the ten most effective cabinet secretaries of the last century. He has written thirteen books, including the best sellers "Aftershock" and "The Work of Nations." His latest is an e-book, "Beyond Outrage." He is also a founding editor of the American Prospect magazine and chairman of Common Cause.

Since the progressive national news media blamed G. Bush for Katrina, it is only fair that Obama be blamed for this one, especially since the seas have not receded at all as Obama promised!

I just wrote in comment in The New Yorker that I hope that we Do Not forget the likes of Romney, Akin, etc., and the same goes for GWB. History is full of tyrants and would-be tyrants, as well as heroes. If we only remember the heroes, or at least, the would-be, gave-it-their-best-though not-always-right folks, then we do ourselves a disservice. By reminding ourselves of what didn't work, or what was wrong, we can, at least to a degree, avoid repeat of similar wrongs.
Down with tyranny in every form,

In case anyone was posing the question: Where is W? which they are not, Mr Reich is wrong. I am at least one American who, if it were possible, would have gladly had 4 more years of George W. instead of Pres Obama. I have no doubt that our country would have been in a much better place now economically had folks like Frank and Dodd in Congress chose not to "roll the dice" with our economic future and helped to drive us into the biggest recession this country has ever seen. I guess Robert's past positions are understandable though since Dems like him always seem to have the wrong instincts when it comes to fixing our economy. I just wish Mr Reich and his Keynesian, big Govt friends would learn from their policy mistakes and adapt their comments to a world where due to our overwhelming debt, we will be forced to live within our means & fix our problems with different alternatives that he and his buddy Obama have been hoisting on us the past 3 years. Mr Reich needs to change if for no other reason then to ensure his comments will have more relevance for our present circumstances

Your friend W caused these deficits by slashing taxes on the rich. Keynesian economics had nothing to do with it, unless you want to count government stimulus provided to the military-industrial complex.

If it weren't for Obama's stimulus package, we'd all have been flushed down the toilet rather than circling the drain. This country needs another stimulus package desperately. And this time one big enough to get the job done.

Wondering how Pat Robinson will turn this around and demonize the dems for this timely storm. Surely he is conferring with god at this time for the answer.

Hey Robert, you know the 51% of Americans that are going to vote for Romney, we like Bush, so why don't you go bury your head in the sand and give us a break.

'Prefumble of The United States of America':

"You People, of the United States of America, in order to form a lone-star union, establish justice as convenient for you, insure domestic tranquility for religious heterosexuals only, provide for the common offense, promote the undoing of welfare, secure the Blessings of Liberty to yourselves and those who agree with you, do ordain and establish this projected, modified Constitution for the United States of America."

All this based on the premise that Isaac will not devastate New Orleans. If it does, the comparisons will REALLY be made. Better keep your fingers crossed RR.

So if Obama handles business in New Orleans while Romney weeps for the downtrodden billionaires during the convention, GOP may not get as big a bump as the are praying for.

I'm sure some religious right would see Hurricane Issac as punishment from God for wrong doings. Maybe denial of Global Warming. Oh Oh Oh the irony !!!!!!
