Why Maine's Governor LePage Can't Erase History, and Why We Need a Fighter in the White House

Posted: 03/24/11 12:08 PM ET

Maine Governor Paul LePage has ordered state workers to remove from the state labor department a 36-foot mural depicting the state's labor history. Among other things the mural illustrates the 1937 shoe mill strike in Auburn and Lewiston. It also features the iconic "Rosie the Riveter," who in real life worked at the Bath Iron Works. One panel shows my predecessor at the U.S. Department of Labor, Frances Perkins, who was buried in Newcastle, Maine.

The LePage administration is also renaming conference rooms that had carried the names of historic leaders of American labor, as well as former Secretary Perkins.

The governor's spokesman explains that the mural and the conference-room names were "not in keeping with the department's pro-business goals."

Are we still in America?

Frances Perkins was the first woman cabinet member in American history. She was also one of the most accomplished cabinet members in history.

She and her boss, Franklin D. Roosevelt, came to office at a time when average working people needed help -- and Perkins and Roosevelt were determined to give it to them. Together, they created Social Security, unemployment insurance, the right of workers to unionize, the minimum wage, and the forty-hour workweek.

Big business and Wall Street thought Perkins and Roosevelt were not in keeping with pro-business goals. So they and their Republican puppets in Congress and in the states retaliated with a political assault on the New Deal.

Roosevelt did not flinch. In a speech in October 1936 he condemned "business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering."

Big business and Wall Street, he said,

...had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me -- and I welcome their hatred.

Fast forward 75 years.

Big business and Wall Street have emerged from the Great Recession with their pockets bulging. Profits and bonuses are as high as they were before the downturn. And they're spending like mad on lobbying and politics. After the Supreme Court's disgraceful Citizens United decision, there are no limits.

Pro-business goals are breaking out all over. Governors across America are slashing corporate taxes as they slash state budgets. House and Senate Republicans are intent on deregulating, privatizing, and cutting spending and taxes so their corporate and Wall Street patrons will do even better.

But most Americans are still in desperate trouble. Few if any of the economic gains are trickling down.

That's why the current Republican assault on workers -- on their right to form unions, on unemployment insurance and Social Security, on public employees, and even (courtesy of Governor LePage) on our common memory -- is so despicable.

And it's why we need a President who will fight for workers and fight against this assault -- just as Perkins and FDR did.

By the way, Maine's Governor LePage may be curious to know that the building housing the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington is named the "Frances Perkins Building." He can find her portrait hanging prominently inside. Also portraits and murals of great leaders of American labor.

A short walk across the mall will bring Governor LePage to an imposing memorial to Franklin D. Roosevelt, should the Governor wish to visit.

Governor, you might be able to erase some of Maine's memory, but you'll have a hard time erasing the nation's memory -- even if it's not in keeping with your pro-business goals.

We need more leaders that will stand up to these out of control unions, they have better pay, better benifits and better retirements than most who are paying their wages and it is never enough. The federal, state and county governments are going broke, do the unions care, NO they just scream raise taxes and give us more money. There was a time unions were needed badly, that time has come and gone.

Well that's not what we have or what we will likely elect in 2012.

Wow! Mr. Reich you have hit the proverbial nail on the head. I am a Mainer and of all of the articles I have read yours was dead on. Gubernatorial candidate LePage said: "...I am going to convince the people of Maine that they come before politics". That comment is striking when contrasted with the before and after photos of the Maine's Department of Labor lobby showing the removal of the labor murals.

Maybe he can convince them, but his actions seem to point in the other direction.

Another development related to this story is a recent proposal to change Maine's voting system to prevent governors from being elected without a majority (instead of a mere plurality) of the votes cast.

Good luck! We need to start at least trying to change laws that allow these activists to steal our government out from under us. F & F!

When I heard the story about the mural on Maine Public Radio, I called the office for my state senator to question whether the governor even had the authority to remove the mural. I could understand a governor perhaps being able to redecorate the governor's mansion residence, but to impose his opinion on a Department of Labor Building seemed like an overreaching of his role.

I've just discovered an article with a similar conclusion...(although for other reasons)

An embarrassment to a state with wonderful people and historically a sense of fairness.

I've to wonder what has happened to our president. He is all for protecting the people of Lybia but says nothing about the plight of the American Worker. What some of the governors are doing is against the law but our government does nothing.
I applaud the actions of this administration on protecting the people of Lidia, the same thing should apply to the workers in America.
We have a DICTATOR IN AMERICA , AND IT'S NAME IS BIG BUSINESS.

Agree but also what kind of AG do we have? He's done nothing but chase down internet "pirates." Very shocking...and what future choice looks any better? F & F.

What's needed is someone to speak candidly to us as citizens informing us that things of great significance, such as bad government or a bad economy, are sustainable only without great and active participation by our many citizens and that our personal failures to react to changes that allowed unfair opportunity that created the imbalance destroying our economy are the worst type of participation along with being our most active.

That would be a Leader. Only the extreme far right has leaders now. Every centrist and left leaning person of prominence is terrified of the labels "socialist," "progressive" and "liberal." So they just stand by and keep quiet. And collect their tax-funded paychecks.
09:24 PM on 05/10/2011
The right has no real leaders, mostly moderates pretending to be conservitive. The socialist's, progressives, and liberals control the Whitehouse and Senate and they are hell bent on destroying America.

From my perspective we need less fighting, and more reasoning......................

What the Democrats fail miserably at, is "calling out" their opponents.

They need (unfortunately) to take a page from Joe Wilson's book. "YOU LIE", should be shouted out, every time a misleading remark is made. Maybe if it is heard enough times, people will start to question their positions, and search for the truth.

"Doesn't fit with the Departments pro-business agenda" Gee, and I thought the Labor Department was about supporting Labor. Who knew?

Well, if you don't have businesses there won't be any jobs, the government can't hire everybody, some people have to work.

What the heck does removal of a pro-labor mural at the Department of Labor have to do with jobs? Do you seriously think that removing the murals will somehow lead to job creation? This post was 2 months ago; have any jobs appeared up there as a result of insulting workers by removing a historical mural?

Liberals cannot provide an effective counterbalance to kleptocracy. By now this must be obvious to all. We need a more radical and vibrant socialist left which can restore the socialist traditions of our country. Without socialists liberals quickly deteriorate into Republican Lights.

This is why unions are a fundamental part of such an equation, I believe; and a necessary hammer if the trend of events is to be forced in a different direction (at this stage, it will more likely require a pile driver). And why the Wisconsin debate should be seen in a broader light than merely public workers vs. public payroll. Any hints to the public regarding such potentials (murals, etc.) are, of course, just confusing and best hidden.

I agree. We ought to know that without the "reds" unions would've never amounted to much. Since we have expunged everything socialist from our society we should not be surprised by the decline of unions as a positive force in our country.

What.... "socialist traditions of Country"? This Country did start out socialist when the Pilgrims came over, it failed miserably because everybody got the same whether they were productive or not. They had too many living off the labors of a few, that is why socialism ended and capitalism started and this Country flourished and led the world in productivity. Starting openly with wilson and moving forward this Country has started it's slide back into socialism and the downfall into third world status is evident. We used to lead the world in education manufacturing and production, we are now way down the list and falling fast. WAKE UP AMERICA, throw the "socialist's", "progressives" and "liberal's out and make America again the greatest Country in the world.

Gov. Paul LePage appreciation for murals invokes thoughts about the murals at Rockefeller Center. And the principles John D. Rockefeller, Jr believed in. Also known as "JDR JR.'S CREED", see:

What are Governor LePage's principles and view of the murals at Rockefeller Center?

I would disagree with the last statement made by Mr. Reich. America's memory is easily erased. Most people today do not know how much the labor movement contributed to the rising living standards of average Americans. They have forgotten much of our own history, a history which is constantly under threat of revision to push a particular agenda.

And are those same governors not doing as much as they can to ensure that our memory is short-lived by cutting money from education and changing the history books to reflect what they wish? All of these things together are creating an American that is almost unrecognizable. In times like these, a nation will either rise up to meet the challenges it faces, or it will fall victim to the machinations of the vultures. If we do not demonstrate the strength of our forebears and rise to this challenge, I think the outcome is becoming sadly obvious to us.

We keep throwing more and more money at education and our children are taught less and less. Have you ever watched Jay Lenos "jay walkers" it is appalling how ignorant our children have become. We need to do away with the NEA, teacher unions, and tenure, the education of our children has fell in the toilet since they were formed.
