John Burton is the chair of the California Democratic Party, and he has over three decades of experience working in the California government. On this week’s episode of Scheer Intelligence, he joins Truthdig Editor in Chief Robert Scheer in a discussion of the current election and the development of campaign finance reform in California.

“When I got elected it cost me, I think, $12,000,” Burton says. “Now they have people running for the State Assembly, it costs them $2 million. It’s one of those things that I don’t know what will stop it. Maybe it would take a really strong president.”

The two also discuss the current election season and analyze the overlap between supporters of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. “I don’t say the game is rigged, but I say it’s unfair,” Burton explains. “Not one goddamn Wall Street thief has gone to prison. … People are waking up, and they know they’re getting screwed—and they just gotta figure out who’s screwing them and why.”
