Would President John McCain forget who made that 3 a.m. call to the special White House phone? I suspect that his aides would not just let him nod off back to sleep, even if they were intimidated by the prospect of one of his alleged intemperate outbursts, but might our septuagenarian president be less than fully focused?

Most likely he would be, although as someone born in the same year as the senator, I too bristle at suggestions that age has made me less perfect than I once was. But it has. Sadly, those brain cells do go, and "senior moments" of befuddlement are more than a joke. But that shouldn't automatically disqualify one of us still-agile silver foxes from the White House, as few of my contemporaries are likely to turn in a worse performance than the much younger current occupant. However, looking at the top two men in the present administration, the age question does make a compelling case for very carefully evaluating McCain's vice-presidential choice.

That was my point when I raised the age issue on a Los Angeles Times Book Festival panel last Sunday, and my sparring partner, right-wing radio pundit Hugh Hewitt, wanted me instantly voted off the island of constant noise. He compared my "ageist" comment to someone making a racist charge against Barack Obama.

I take his point, as absurd as it first appeared. Absurd because it is obviously true that aging, as opposed to skin color or gender, does have a deleterious effect on one's physical and mental functioning, and to deny this evident biological reality is as nonsensical as denying evolution itself. The species survives when each generation burns out and is replaced by a hopefully superior one, and while it is natural to want to linger on the scene as long as possible, we cannot insist on our personal indispensability to the continuation of the human experience.

Of course Hewitt was not doing anything of the sort, any more than he would genuinely embrace creationism, summarily dismiss fears of global warming or otherwise honestly endorse the tenet of the sort of phony science that right-wing pundits must from time to time condone. They do so for opportunistic reasons, and that is why the significance of McCain's age must be denied by those eager to maintain the GOP's hold on the presidency. They will hold their noses and vote for him despite the sensible positions he has at times had the temerity to advance, impervious to their blackmail. Impervious, that is, until he decided to make a second run for the presidency, leading him to sharply reverse his past principled stances and accommodate torture, tax cuts for the rich, Pat Robertson and other favored fetishes of the Republican base. The right-wing talk show bully boys still don't trust him, but he's the only horse left to ride.

While they continue to loathe him for his fatal flaw of occasionally embracing a moderate thought, they are dependent upon his electoral victory to extend their vastly disproportionate political power. They fully expect McCain to betray key points of their cryogenic agenda; on Sunday, Hewitt condemned most of McCain's Senate performance and in particular his reasonable stance on immigration.

Their hope of retaining influence rests on saddling McCain with a proven rightist as his vice-presidential choice. The hunt is now on for the new Cheney, but such a candidate has to be brought in under the radar because the public is for the first time in modern history keenly aware that the vice president can play an enormously destructive role. That is particularly true if the potential president himself is, actuarially speaking, more likely to kick the bucket. Or, less dramatically, simply underperforms.

Let's not kid any longer. Age is a factor in this race and nowhere is it so important as in McCain's vice-presidential choice. If he picks from the very thin ranks of reasonable Republicans, it will be reassuring to more moderate voters attracted to McCain for his independence of thought as reflected in support of campaign finance reform and his opposition to some outrageously bloated military weapons expenditures that he has on occasion done much to expose. But if he turns to the loony wing for a running mate, we must become very concerned about the ability of a man in his 70s to fully perform in the world's most important office. Is there another Cheney lurking in the wings?

Arianna referred to McCain as a "Trojan Horse" of Neo-Con ideas, being pushed toward the White House. Worse yet he brings with him an appointed, ... "anointed" if you will, Vice Presidential candidate as you describe above. Republican voters believe they will get a moderate to replace Bush, but are, as you point out, getting a younger Neo-Con to replace Cheney.

Two years into his term, ... when McCain grows tired or worse, ... we will find out just how "moderate" his VP, ... yet to be named, will be. Don't Republicans ever learn?

I agree that McCain's age will be a big factor for many voters in the general election. I expect that the closer the general election comes, the more we'll see about the negative effects of aging in the media. However, that doesn't mean that older voters, who admire him, won't still consider voting for him. So, IMO the vice-presidential choice will be important on both tickets.

McCain's age, and especially his age in the context of an election about "change", will prove to be the crucial issue of this election year.

Dick Cheney for VP '08! Wouldn't that be a GOP wetdream? 22d amendment be damned. It speaks to a two term limit to the office of POTUS, not VPOTUS.

My guess is he'll pick Mitt Romney,so please get off your asses and make sure we get a Democratic President. The prospect of having that psychopathic game show host as V.P. ought to be motivational enough for anyone to get out and canvass, donate, register voters, anything!

Whereas McCain has courted the uber Right in order to get the nomination, Mitt Romney is a true ultra Right wing Rethuglican. Romney's private equity group, Bain Capital, was devoted to fleecing companies, putting people out of work, cutting employees' pay and benefits, throwing the companies into bankruptcy, then walking away with tens of millions (SCM). Priority one with Mitt is to make the rich richer and let the rest of us suck air. Romney makes McCain a shoo-in for Republican voters.

You're looking pretty old yourself there, Robert. Maybe you should think about retiring too.

Although, studies have shown that pain and sufferng can have more of a detrimental effect on the mind than depression, I don't think it's McCain's age or service record. Also, scientists have reflected that if, some day, many citizens will live into their 100's, this will bode well for the world because age does bequeath wisdom and, as you age (if you don't fall into depression) you become smarter and smarter. Look at Jimmy Carter. He was in his 70's during the past two elections when many citizens noted during his discussions with moderators on PBS, that he seemed more informed on the issues and had a much better ability to communicate than did the two major Presidential candidates. People were calling in asking him to run, again, for President. I'm 61 and, when I look back at when I was 46, Obama's age, I discern a big difference in knowledge and, particularly, humility, although, when blogging in the current Orwellian environment, I, sometimes, don't show it. The problem with McCain is that he runs with a bunch of narcissistic, fascistic, international criminals and he doesn't seem to have any moral compass and no wholistic vision for the future of nation.

Mr. McCain, on more than one occasion, has shown signs of intellectual weakness. It is not a trivial matter if a future commander in chief can not keep the factions in an active war zone straight. He has openly admitted that economics is not his forte and one can not expect him to base his decisions as a president on sound economic analysis. The results of that show, yet again, in his pandering of "gas tax holidays" which are yet another straight way to economic hell for this country. This country can not afford a candidate with senior moments who replaces sound analysis with sound bites of his party's random ideology.

Am I the only one who has noticed Sen. McCain's newly botoxed face? His face has been riddled with fillers over the last couple of weeks. Has anyone in the MSM noticed this? When your campaign makes you get BOTOX to hide your age so as to seem younger and more electable, you are sad and pathetic. Someone please put up a before and after shot of him. I swear his forehead hasn't moved in a week.

How do you know she's had "plastic surgery"? Did she get a nosejob or something that the rest of us aren't aware of? Were you in the surgery center with her? Please tell us your source.

Nonetheless, any 72 year old man who wants to be President of the United States and gets Botox and Restalyne injections IS pathetic. Sorry. It's okay if you're making the next Indiana Jones movie or if you do something else more worthy of Botox injections for a living, but Botox for "Mr. Big and Bad" John McCain IS pathetic. It shows where his priorities lie. Plus, it looks sooooooo contrived as a political move to make him look much younger. If this was something he always did, it may not be as bad. But, instead, it's obvious, and the ACT of getting the fillers done now make him look desperate.

Just looking at McBombBombIran's general appearance and factoring in his history of mistreatment by his captors in Vietnam, what chance does he have of finishing his first term (assuming he was elected)? My guess is less than 50%. Yes, age does matter, and considering the insanity currently infesting the 'Republican' party these days, McCain will saddle up with a Righter-than-right vice-presidential candidate in order to try to hold the rightwingnutjobs in line in November. Scary prospect.

I fail to see how McCain's choice of running mate would impact on the ability of a man in his seventies to perform in the job of President. If his running mate was 35, what difference would that make? The President would still be in charge, and he would still be 72. If the running mate is a right wing looney, what difference would that make? McCain would still be in charge, and he is in fact a right wing looney.

Once the MSM (right wing media) is forced to focus on McCain, it will become clear that he is well past his prime and that he is completely out of step with the rest of America.
