Santorum Wants You to Go Forth and Multiply

Posted: 02/29/2012 9:40 am

It now appears that Rick Santorum is likely to be in the GOP presidential race for weeks, if not months, to come. If so, we should get to know him a little better. He just might be the next President of the United States.

It's not clear yet what he would do for our country, but it's increasingly clear what he would have you do for your country: Go forth and multiply.

By now, most of us are familiar with Santorum's position on birth control. We know that he wants to give states the authority again to ban contraception. And we now know, despite his earlier equivocation, that he's against Title X, the federal program that provides low-income women with access to family planning services.

And it's increasingly clear that Santorum's position on birth control stems from his personal and religious beliefs about women and childbearing. He obviously believes that privately-held religious convictions should play a central role in public policy. He says that when he first read President Kennedy's speech on the separation of church and state he wanted to "throw up."

So when he talks about the "dangers of contraception," he's not just giving us an insight into his personal views, he's revealing to us the values that would guide his presidency. In other words, he's not just "pro-life," in the sense that he opposes abortion, even in the cases of rape or incest. He's pro-life in the sense that he wants Americans to have a lot more babies, whether planned or not.

And this conviction apparently carries over to tax policy. In a letter to the Wall Street Journal a few days ago, he says that he wants to triple the personal tax exemption for dependent children," raising it to $11,100 from income for each child instead of $3,700, an extra $7,400." For large families with middle-class incomes this would effectively wipe-out all income tax liability, placing a much larger tax burden on smaller families, particularly for childless couples or singles without any dependents.

Such a monumental shift in tax-policy would give a whole new meaning to "supply-side" economics. Instead of government tax policy being used to promote savings and investment, tax policy would be used to promote procreation.

Of course, Santorum's tripling of the child tax exemption would do nothing to lower the cost of childbearing for low-income women and households who don't have any income tax liability. A refundable tax child tax credit might help low-income mothers, but as Santorum's letter to the Wall Street Journal makes clear, he thinks that would be wrong, because that would be tantamount to "welfare."

Santorum's proposed tripling of the child tax exemption is social-engineering on a massive scale, but of course Santorum insists that when he talks about social issues, he's just "talking about freedom." He doesn't want "government imposing themselves on your lives."

Does he really believe that limiting access to contraceptives and stopping women from preventing unwanted pregnancies is about freedom? If so, are we talking about the freedom to have an unintended pregnancy? Because that's the practical effect of shutting down government-funded family planning clinics.

Despite the eye-popping implications of what Rick Santorum keeps on saying about contraception and childbearing, he still insists that the press is giving way too much coverage to his views on social issues. Really? If his proposed tripling of the child tax exemption is any indication, his conservative views on social issues would be a driving force in a Santorum administration.

Americans needs to know more about the values that would underpin a Santorum Administration, not less. If Santorum feels that the women of America are not having enough babies, and that a major shift in tax policy is needed to boost procreation, he ought to tell us why. Is it because of the Biblical command, "Go forth and multiply," or does he have other reasons for making childbearing the central plank of his campaign? The voters of America deserve an answer to that question.

He has been one of the many in the team pulling the country along, now he wants to be the one in the drivers seat. Not a very good choice. Can't tell from one week to the next where he really stands due to the large amount of sh*t around him. To be a leader, is to be out in front, not the driver, in the back (think horse drawn wagon).

Yes let us go forth & multiply, like the lemmings do until we run out of resources to feed & fuel our lives. If that is not enough of a blunt term, then look into what happened in Rapa Nui (Easter Island). When the population gets to the point exceeding the amount of land to feed itself, then you will have to move on to greener pastures or die off. Many countries are there already. The Earths resources are limited, so unless we start to expand beyond into the realm of outer space,we are stuck here, and will eventually starve. Any fool who thinks we have an unlimited amount of resources is either blind or just too stupid to realize the reality of our predicament. Birth control should be left up to the individuals themselves to decide, not legislated into a narrow stipulation for the masses to adhere to. If you don't want the pill, or other types of birth control, then don't use them ! But don't try to tell others that they can't even have them because you refuse to pay for them. To say we all shouldn't be paying higher premiums so others can get their birth control is like saying we shouldn't pay for the soap & antiseptics that are used in medical facilities because we see no point in keeping others from getting an infection. Or perhaps we shouldn't have to pay for Liver Transplants for those who took too many drugs or drank too

Santorum will not restrict access to contraception! He just said tax-payers should not fund abortion.
Some liberals have changed the word "contraception" to "birth-control" in order to deceive.
Do not mix up words in order to smear a good man.
"Birth-Control" is used by Pelosi & Fluke because they want LIE in order to lump "abortion" in.
$9 a month ($108) is enough for contraception. But Pelosi asked Fluke to talk $1000 pa.

Abortion involves taking a LIFE protected by the US Declaration of Independence.

Same trick about Global Warming ( after they can no longer lie about warming in snow - they change the term to "cllimate change" in order to continue to lie).

Global Warming is not going to end the seasonal weather fluctuations. We will still get snow, just not as much as we used too. We also will get more hot weather and or less or more wet weather. Personally I don't care anymore, 'cause this planet has had many different weather patterns in the past and will so in the future. Whether we (the Humans) continue to exist, to this planet there is no difference. In the end we will all go the way of the stars, unto dust.

A few months ago he said that eliminating abortions would solve the future Social Security shortfall. More babies would eventually grow up to have jobs and contribute to Social Security.

Yes it will eliminate the need for a while, but eventually you will need more persons to take care of those persons. Think of the pyramid / ponzi scheme. The more players coming in have to be paid for by more new players.
And just where are those jobs coming from??? With all of the U.S. jobs going overseas to cheaper paying countries what are we supposed to do for work?

This country was founded on what you call "privately-held religious convictions". Or did you forget that "all men are... endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights"?

Wait.... did he say, endowed by their creator? That has to be a mis-print right? I know I've heard that somewhere before... but where??? Hmmm?

I guess with more than 3 Million+ Catholics, not one other than Santorum, share this "privately-held" religious conviction?

Heck, there are more than 250,000 people in the Philadelphia area alone that seem to NOT share this "privately-held" religious conviction... Right?

I'm sorry... You must have done your homework before writing this article right?

You asked EVERY Catholic if they hold this "privately-held" religious conviction that contraception is wrong - correct? And Santorum is the ONLY ONE that still believes in this "privately-held" religious conviction...

Well, thanks for clearing that up for us...

It would have been nice if the US had know more about Obama's "privately-held" religious convictions before they blindly voted for him.

But we know all about him - He's Muslim.... no, was it Christian??? No, definitely Muslim... Or is it Christian this week??? Let me see, who is he speaking to? A Christian group....? Then he definitely is Christian.... right??? At least until next week's lecture to the muslims....

Sincerely,
The other Catholic that holds Santorum's "privately-held" religious conviction...

Most Catholics may say they are against contraception... But use it anyway, because they do not want more children. Only the wealthy want to dictate what others can get or have to make our lives better. They got theirs... now we can't get the same.

Have the Duggar's appeared in any Santorum commercials yet? If not, it's about time, since they are going to be new ideal of an American family that we all must strive for.

It amazes me that, very often, those who oppose access to family planning services for low income women often scream the loudest about "huge welfare payments to low income women who have multiple children."

This man has no clue what the President does. I guess that why he is harping on the only thing he knows - his personal set of beliefs around reproduction. His wife lived with a guy for many years before she met Rick and that guy was a doctor who performed abortions. He said she never had any issues with it, - or with birth control. She never even brought it up. I think Santorum is dangerous - a man who wants to force his beliefs on all of us, and a man who does not recognize other religions and opinions. That is truly backward.

04:37 PM on 02/29/2012
So, if you are a couple that would like to have children but cannot due to barrenness or sterility, you are double-punished with higher taxes? And, if you're a gay couple that would like to have children but unfortunately live in one of the many states that don't allow for same-sex marriage or adoption (even for all those 'extra' low-income babies), you're TRIPLE-punished? This really is about the sadistic desire of extremist Christians to punish those who don't believe as they do - forcing them into unfortunate circumstances so they can feel as low as they are looked upon. It's all so gross - and it will never end.

Rick Santorum is one of the scariest politicians I've seen in my lifetime. He truly sees women as nothing more than overgrown children that he gets to sleep with and use as a maid service. His outright contempt for women is just sickening. He is pure evil.

I especially love how he doesn't want us to be able to have abortion access or prenatal testing, but his wife was allowed to have an abortion- excuse me, induced miscarriage- at twenty weeks when the pregnancy was threatening her health and the fetus had abnormalities. Then he takes the fetus home in a shoebox for his kids to cuddle, kiss, take pictures with, sing lullabies too and dress up. Yeah, that's a man of sound mind that I really want running my country.

You're entitled to your opinion but get your facts straight--- His wife did not have an abortion. She went into pre-term labor. There was an operation done in utero to try to save the life of the child, then there was an infection and then pre-term labor. At that point in the pregnancy the child is not viable outside the womb. She would of had to go through labor and delivery though. I know my child died at 20 weeks. The "fetus" was a beautiful little boy. We also had a funeral service and burial-- you really shouldn't make fun of how people choose to grieve.

Burial acceptable for a fetus. Taking home to cuddle not so much.

He also sees women as baby factory homeschooling teachers. Because all those kids women have that keep them barefoot and pregnant and home? The moms get to homeschool them because they should not go to school where they might be indoctrinated into learning evil things like evolution and global warming. So women have to bear multiple children, not go back to work, and homeschool the kids so they'll be religiously brainwashed. Hey, sign me up! Sounds like a great life! Why should *I* have any say in it anyway?? The menz decide these things.
