Defending Ann Coulter

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Recently Donny Deutsch, the CNBC quasi-personality tried to goad Ann Coulter regarding her views on Jews. Ann delivered a typical Coulter-ism and lo and behold Donny Deutsch gets press. Which he needs. His show, according to TVNewser frequently "scratches," i.e. gets so few viewers they statistically do not exist. Maybe they are scared off by Deutch's Agnes Moorehead-like reading glasses.

Twice now Elizabeth and John Edwards have quite publicly pronounced their indignation at remarks Coulter made regarding John Edward's masculinity. The campaign dollars poured in. Notice a pattern?

More than a few HuffPo posts have been devoted to Coulter lately. It's understandable liberals rail against President Bush. They are protesting his actions, not his words. Okay, maybe we should all protest his syntax. But Ann Coulter simply offers up words. Sometimes bizarre, imprudent words, but simply words nonetheless. For this she has to travel to speeches with a bodyguard.

What is more offensive; Ann Coulter's remarks about 9/11 widows, or women being tortured to death in Saw? Her thoughts on Muslims, or women being tortured to death in Saw 2? Her writing on Bill Clinton, or women being tortured to death in Saw 3? Need I comment on how offensive last weekend's grosses were for Saw 4?

But it's all free speech, and after the last few years, that's one of the few liberties we have left to hold on to. Ann Coulter stirs the pot, and her remarks are all the more infuriating because they come packaged in a hot little black cocktail dress. Tell the truth, you've wondered what it would be like, haven't you? I thought so.

Republicans don't so much like Ann for what she says. We like her because she has big brass balls, unlike most Republicans in Washington right now. Guiliani? Whipped. Romney? A pretty boy. Huckabee? Diet freak. Thompson? He dated Lorie Morgan for God's sake. You think Democrats are frustrated with Republicans? Trust me, Red Staters are far more frustrated. We want a man. That man is Ann.

Ann Coulter fearlessly says what she says, and in doing so exercises her right to free speech. The entertainment community should be particularly sensitive to this. Remember Theo Van Gogh? Ann Coulter is not hurting anyone, but she is making them think. Don't ban Ann, as some groups are suggesting. Ban the thought police.

Defend her? Sure. For voter fraud, for being a miserable excuse for a human being, for the ability to reel off bald faced lies with a scary ease.....everyone deserves a good defense before they're taken to the guillotine (now that's one reality show I would Tivo and replay endlessly).

Let her rant and rave. She only embarasses the true republicans who have not been republiconned by the likes of the succubus that is andy coulter.

Ann Coulter operates from a position of entitlement; she who wisecracks best deserves more than the rest. The only cure for people like her after the revolution is to make them live in hovels and try to scrape out a living.

The point isn't that Ann Coulter merely speaks her twisted logic to all who will listen, she does so on "news" platforms and on stages with real journalists and "legitimate" politicians. It's not unlike the issue taken up with Don Imus. If Imus was some podunk talk radio host in the middle of nowhere who never had reputable journalist and politicians on his show; few would have cared what he said. However, particularly since appearing on MSNBC, he has been privy to a treasure trove of choice political guests. This is turn, makes them complicit and guilty by association when he makes the kind of remarks that he does.

You could easily get my redneck, bigotic lunatic uncle to say some choice words about Muslims and liberals, but you don't go and put him on MSNBC, CNN or, even, Fox no matter how good he looks in a black mini-skirt. Ann Coulter is no different than the politically naive or hateful who only exist on the fringe and might find on an audience on youtube at best. To give any more of an audience than her vile factless rhetoric deserves is doing a disservice to public discourse. We end up talking about the extreme thoughts of a hate-filled bigot instead of focusing on bigger issues in a more mature manner.

Free speech is "one of the few liberties we have left?" Just who does self-proclaimed Red Stater Mr. Galloway think is responsible for that state of affairs?

If our administration -- chosen by Red Staters, fed by people like Coulter using mock outrage to fan the flames of real hatred -- had its way, we wouldn't even have that left to us. At a time when dissent is labeled treason, it's hard to get worked up about the free speech rights of the person doing the labeling.

Galloway says don't ban Ann, ban the thought police. I wonder if he felt the same way when MoveOn was criticized by the right wing and denounced by Congress for exercising their right to free speech. Will he complain about Bush's remarks yesterday about MoveOn and Code Pink? I doubt it.

Wonderful post. It's fun to get some insight into how people like Mr. Galloway think. There's no logic, just grabbing for bits and pieces that support what they want to believe. More, please.

Anne Coultergeist is entertaining? I bet you people would have loved the Coliseum in Rome centuries ago. No wonder those Saw movies are so popular. No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Britney, Paris Hilton, and Ann .... I will take part in discussions about them mostly to point out what a mess they are, but I don't take them seriously. I feel sorry for them for being so messed up, and I feel sorry for me because I have to keep seeing their rants and raves in the news.

Free Speech or Fair Speech

In the 1960s, several so-called black militants were jailed for allegedly "inciting" others to riot. Why were they not entitled to the "free speech" defense, yet today's society is so willing to use that rationale to give the Coulters, Savages, Limbaughs, etc., a pass? Look at recent threats of violence against judges, incited by right-wing blowhards, and condoned by such intellectual "illuminaries" as Sen. Cornyn. Only when one of these sh*theads is tried and convicted as an accomplice before the fact, will they temper their ill-conceived commentary. It's a case of constipation of the brain and diarrhea of the mouth.

"Tell the truth, you've wondered what it would be like, haven't you? I thought so..."

Like most men, I've had...uh...clean and unclean thoughts about many women.

But Ann Coulter has never been one of them. There's nothing the least bit sexually - or intellectually - attractive about a vile, misanthropic creature like Coulter.

I suggest you run into a crowded theater, and fearlessly proclaim you free-speech rights by screaming "FIRE!"

"Republicans don't so much like Ann for what she says. We like her because she has big brass balls"

And she has the balls to do what exactly? SAY some terribly vile things? So you *ACTUALLY DO* like what she says. You just don't want to admit you're a fascist.

i've read a great deal about adolph hitler and through all these volumes i have never seen it mentioned that he physically harmed anyone. so i guess ann coulter can say anything she wants so long as she doesn't "physically" hurt anyone and also, so it seems, she NEVER maligns a con-servative. Mr. Galloway you must know the old saying,"no matter how you slice it, it's still baloney."?

"But it's all free speech, and after the last few years, that's one of the few liberties we have left to hold on to".

that is a pretty bold statement and only applicable to those who have political and financial backing from the Main Stream Media. Follow the money. FAUX news blacked-out Ron Paul during the GOP debate, ignored their own text poll, and gave credence to a political hack named Luntz.

Our speach is becoming less free, witnessed by "don't tase me bro", CFR demonstrations turned riots, the "patriot act", military commissions act, amnesty for telecons...the list goes on.

that the INTERNET is the ONLY true medium where real free speach is waged is great. But, there are bills in the works to regulate it, candidates that want to monitor it...using the federal mandates we have implaced during this administration. Its very sad.

HR Bill 3835 The American Freedom Agenda Act will help restore our constitution and civil liberties. write and call your representatives and get this bill passed.

One thing I feel a need to say to many posters here is Grow Up. I know it's difficult to swallow sometimes, but freedom is eventually it's own reward. Not everyone is going to agree with you, or say things you like.

I don't like Coulter. So I don't give any attention to Coulter. Simple.

What many need to realize, is given the proper judicial committee, or justice appointee, the definition of "hate speech" can get pretty broad. The verbiage use by many who propose Coulter's words are criminal will have no one but themselves to blame when their own words are deemed criminal as well.

Disagree vehemently, counter intelligently, but the day you seek to ban by law anyone's words or opinion, the game is lost for everyone.
