The name Sydney is of French origin, a variant of Saint-Denis.

Saint-Denis is a commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, where in 1892 the residents put into power a socialist administration. By the 1920s, the city had acquired the nickname "la ville rouge" or the "red city" for its infamously leftist leanings.
